Just curious...i was sitting here and i started to think about how if there's a puddle on a table, you can set a rolled up paper towel in the center of it (just one side) and let the other side of the rolled up paper towel hang off the edge over a bucket, and it'd absorb the water and transfer it to the other side thus putting it into the bucket. So i was thinking, if i put a slice of rag down the side of a pot while replanting. But i'd make sure it was long enough to go to the bottom of the soil and out the top with 2 feet or so of loose rag coming out of the soil. Then i was thinking to put a little cup with so much water in it, then sticking the other end of the rag into it. Do you think that it would pull the water through and let the soil absorb from the rag? or do you think the rag would steal moisture from the soil?

Hell, do you even think this would WORK? LOL!

sounds like a mold problem waiting to happen.. ther is no need for wick system in soil....in hydro a wick system like you are reffering to is common for low budget grows.

just be careful with experimenting with your soil.....

Remember that MJ roots in soil in need time to "breathe". So a constant wick of moisture would hinder growth and possibly kill the plant. Give it a whirl and let us all know how it works man. That is the best way to find anything out... Doing it your self :smoke1:

Yup, well it wouldn't always be moist either. I wouldn't let it sit in the water 24/7.... I'd just put so many ML's of water in it, then come back with the soil has no more moisture left and put the ammount of ML's needed into the cup again. But Mr. wakenbake had a point with the mold, But it's just going to be feading water to the soil, which is where it can get moldy if sitting for too long, buut the sun might help with that here, it's really really hot. I mean when it rained yesterday, the sun came out and you can see everything evaporating here, like steam coming from everything lol. It happens here all the time, like you can spill water and see steam coming up because of the sun. so i'm thinking it'd dry out quick enough that it wont mold. But i'll try it with an experimental thing. if it actually works decent, i wouldn't use it all the time either, just when i had to leave for a few days and it gets hoooot out here so i wouldn't want my plants to be water deprived.

Mold on the soil is not a bad thing... If your are growing organic, it is actually very beneficial. Mycorrhizae baby.

in theory it sounds like a pretty good idea.. im sure it would work, give it a shot man! another thing you can do for water is get the little container saucers.. they sell them everywhere, for any size pot.. you fill it with water, and just place the pot onto the saucer and it has water at the ready in case you forget to water or whatever.. but it prolly wouldnt be good for a plant without an established root system

Yeah, once my plant gets root bound in the 16 oz cup that's prolly the thing i'll have to do if this wick system doesn't work beacuse this thing is going to be needing a lot of water ya know.

mold in your soil can be a problem.. it can cause root damage.

Mike or beneficial microbes ... are just that, beneficial. The kind of mold and problems i am talking about is not. Mold is not beneficial to your plants.

Well we'll see lol. I'm just going to try anyways. I'm growing 2 plants in the 16 oz cup thing just incase one is male. But i'll also test the "wick system" on one of the plants during it. we'll see how that plant turns out. Right now i have a cup of soil and a cup of water out there with a rag transferring, i wanna see how fast it will soak into the soil, and also watch the water level once the soil is wet enough just to make sure it's not going to transfer more water still and over flood. Then the only thing to do after that is to test it to one of the plants. But i have 3 plants germing so if all three come up i'll just do it to another one.

Your princable works on gravity and a sort of syphoning idea I guess.

What about a tube with small holes in the end like syphoning fuel from a car... ensuring the resevoir level is higher than the soil.

suk it and see? LOL

I have to work out a system for my seven plants in pots when I go away for 10 days in August.... hot hot hot..

Best of luck.

Well i've thought about that. But i just figured a rag that would let it out slower would be better. But i'm not sure. Other than that i was thinking one of those flat plastic hose like things. But i don't really know lol! I'm just going to try the rag one.

The other one i thought of, i don't really know how well it would work, I thought of maybe filling a 2 liter with water and from the top of the cap, push a tiny hole through that way water would drop very very slowly. like sometimes in some cases every minute, or however long it will take to drop. But the soil needs to breath sometimes. So that would kinda...be bad lol.

i guess we'll see how it turns out though, i'ma bout to go check how moist that soil is getting with the rag in it.
