Okay, I have read about a dozen threads on here so far and have read several different ways to selectively seed buds.

I have read that you can shake the pollen off of a male branch into a paper bag and then put that bag onto a female branch and shake the pollen onto her.

I have read the you can shake the pollen onto a piece of paper or piece of aluminum foil or into a tupperware bowl and use that to hold the pollen and then you can paint it on with toothpicks, Q-tips, or paint brushes.

I have read that after you pollenate a branch you want to wait an hour and then spray with water. Should you and if so, what is the purpose?

So, what is the most effecient and effective way to go about pollenating only a couple of buds for future grows? And would it be possible to collect pollen from an inside male and then go to an outdoor grow and pollenate buds there or vice versa without the pollen losing its effectiveness?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hey StickyIcky,
Cross pollenization works the same way for 85% of the plants that grow on this planet, and I have done pollenating for many years so I'm pretty good in this area. I personally like to use a very fine horsehair paintbrush, and dont laugh but I use my wifes sweatband around my wrist and dab back and forth spreading the pollen onto the band and then onto the stamins. The reason for the washing is simple. When pollen is hit with a lot of moisture it will quickly germinate and then it dies. Pollen is very fine, and is easily airborn with the slightest air movement, so if you were planning on pollenating several strains you might want to make sure of what strain you are going to waft through the air at them. My books tell me that germination in favorable temps can occur in as little as 20 minutes, but in cooler temp can take as long as two days, (something to think on), this is why a bag can be so helpful, remember that pollen blows everywhere.
A small side note for you and RatherBBurnin about genetics. Look at the differences between brothers within a family, say there are 5 brothers born to the same set of parents, now look at the genetic differences, one can have dark brown hair, two are blonds and one has red hair ?? yet the parents are stable right ?? Same thing can happen when you are cross breeding, but there are ways to take advantage of this, and ways to avoid this if that route is more desirable. Just some food for thought... As for going indoors then outdoors, the only things that would matter then might be temp, and air movement. Outside of that no biggy. Pollen can be saved for future use, but it must be remembered that it needs to be stored where it is DRY, and cool, and then this is short term anyways. You want to keep the extra pollen if you are ever going to do an oil thing like Smokey did.
Hope this is found useful by you, I'm back into my studies, so looking forward to gathering even more tidbits.

Spraying with water makes the pollen non viable so it doesn't pollinate the rest of your plant, only the part you selected. I only leave mine for 30 minutes before the spray with great success.

Thanks a lot guys. So collect the pollen in a bag and paint it on with a very fine horsehair paint brush. Then mist with water to prevent the pollen from transfering to other buds that I dont want pollenated. I think I should be able to do it.

Anyways, I wont be making a cross. I'll just be pollenating a pure strain, so that I wont ever have to buy seeds for that strain again. :D

Yo, remember to give it a bit to finish the germination, then water

Yeah, I probably give atleast 30 minutes to hour of supervision first. Thanks.

Hey sticky. On some headshop sites I found earlier this week they make pollen packers. Metal things that are designed for you to store pollen for short periods and it even lets you pack it down with a thing it comes with. That might come in real helpful for this. I plan on doing this next grow with my purp widows and white widdows. I'm going to turn my hdtv box into a mini grow box for 1 male so I can collect pollen from it so I too don't have to buy seeds as well!

We sooo have to compare our next grows and try to start them at the same time so we can see how they fare being that we are growing from the same company and same seeds.
