The start of my first Journal.
(of any kind, so only appropriate.)

Three main plants, 8 babies in the germ tray for backup or additional grow.
I am Using random seeds I had collected over a 6 month period, selected the
larger and darker striped seeds. Germinated in a zip-lock bag; kindergarten
style.

From the picture of the line up, the three main's;
and to the right of them is the plastic tray of babies
the one to the left, Gangi.
The center one is Ike (the younger out of the three...Tyke = Ike)
one on the right is Mrs. T, which seems to be the stronger one of the three
and the most likely to be a male.(knock on wood that she won't be)
After the germ process I had planted them in see-thru plastic carry out
soup containers; after I had drilled a few ventilation holes for the water and
the soil. All three of the containers have different amount of drills in them,
a little test to see how effective it would be to have more or less aeration for the soil.

The soil I am using is Miracle-Gro Potting mix. Now I am not totally sure if
this is a good idea, but I am figuring I would have to use less supplements
or none at all to the soil in the long run with this method. I water the

lants at least three or four times a day. Two times heavy watering, once
in the morning and once in the mid-afternoon when the sun is in the
highest point. The window I have has the sun shine in perfectly.

So far T and Gangi are 1 month old and ike is 2 weeks. I am going to switch
over to some slightly larger pots in another month for a marginally larger plant.

ya becareful with that mg soil. it can be tuff at times. when i use it i don't feed anything untill they go into flowering due to the time released nutes. also becareful not to over water. everytime you water you release more nutes from the soil. this can burn your plants and even stunt their growth. i let my soil dry out between waterings. just my 2 cents.

they look good, what type of lights are you using?

thanks for the head up about the MG soil. I will definetly keep that in mind. I try not to over water during the later afternoons, the morning times the sun hits them dead on and gets the soil bone dry. So i try to keep it a bit moist at night.

As for lights i am just keeping them on my window sill right now absorbing natural light. trying to decide on a lighting system, but this apartment is old and cant barely handle my microwave.

I had thought about designing a solar power battery for night time lighting using a halidate light bulb. But i really just wanna keep it simple with a natural grow.

Looking good buddie but listen to Slowmo77... Excellent start.

i am well aware about the transparent cups. i am using those only because i cant find anything else around the house.

Wrapping them in duct tape will work.

duct tape brrrooooooooo, did that to my containers...

Looking good man. Looking forward to future posts. These any particular strain ? Or just some bagseed ?

  • They are some bag seed's.
  • and duct tape, dont know why i didnt think of that!
Today i went in to take a look at them, One of the containers seems to be having an alge bloom. Now, does anyone think this can possibly work to the plants advantage or will the alge just consume most of the o2 for the roots or cause other harm?

Thoughts/suggestions?

it shouldnt cause any problems but i am not certain
imo i would scrape it off then cover the top of the pots to stop it coming back it needs light to live ,,hope you sort it out :peace:

You will have algae as long as your use transparant planters. Light plus water = algae

I just wrapped the containers with blue painters tape. Gonna leave the algae there, who knows, it might give the plant some extra nutrients when the bloom stops. Like spirella algae for Fish, improves gill function and colour. might have a positive effect for plants.

So it has been a day since i wrapped the plant "gangi" in the blue tape.

I think the algae has helped the plant a bit, because the plant is starting to show signs of budding. She has a strong strong flower smell coming from her. is this common for a plant that has been planted for about a month and a week? The other plant that has been alive just as long has no smell at all.

Thoughts and/or idea's?

update:

So the plants are getting a bit larger and more filled out than the last time you guys saw them.

I tried to get pictures of the stalk to see if anyone could tell me for sure what the sex are. none of them came out to clear, however I am not seeing any bulbs near the base of each branch so thats gotta be a good thing right?

i have noticed that the larger plants start to smell really strong when it is about to storm, any explination?

Also included a picture of the algea that was growing in one of the pots, i really think it is helping the plant out.
