Something on my roots...?

So, I took a look at the root system of one of my plants tonight - the plan was to change out nutes, but...
Anyway, theres a section of where the root is turning brownish - pic attached. Anyone know what this is? No signs from above as the plant is doing well and lots of new roots and growth.

This is a strain called Power Plant - pics attached. Grown in DWC. PH always between 5.9 - 6.2. Using GH 3 part nutes - presently at about 1000 ppm. Last water change was exactly 10 days ago. It was germinated on November 20, put into a system on the 26th. So, 5 weeks old. Also, it was topped 4 days ago. Not sure what else needs to be shared...?

BTW, the roots are twisted due to the bubbler/stone being off center, close to the wall. I used a cheapy 6" Wally world long stone while waiting on an online order. I honestly still haven't changed it. Plan was to do it with the reservoir change - will be tomorrow if all goes well. If not, the day after Christmas.

Looks like the start of root rot, what temp is the water?
More air and lower water temp to prevent
Might need to remove brown slimy root area's
Don't mess around, clean all reservoirs and get the temps down and air volume up, root rot will spread.

I fought root rot in my first grow, twice. Hydroguard helped immensely. Your plants can continue growing white roots from the old roots.

I didn't have a clean place to set my plant when I checked nutes/pH was how I introduced it. I had a light leak, and I used perlite. The perlite micro grit adhered to the rotted roots reinocculating the bad germs/virus. I nursed mine to the eighth week and cut it up to make a sea of clones last night.

The roots were not "twisted" because of your choice of air stones. I often used the inexpensive Wallyworld air stones. This is something else. Make sure you have lots of air and that the res water does not get too warm (one of the most common causes of root rot).

You should also lower your pH (though this is not related to your root problems). You should be running closer to 5.8 or so. I always liked to start mine at about 5.4 and let it drift up to 6.0 or so to ensure nutrient uptake of all nutrients.

I have another pump waiting which I bought for another system I'm gonna build. I'll just add it until I move it into the flower room, which has a much stronger air pump.

I took another look tonight and it appears to be just the one root. And yes, white roots still producing like crazy - pic attached. Upper growth is still going strong.

I did order some Hydroguard today. It will be here Friday. Hoping I'm catching things early enough.

Question

So I was looking for other recommendations/remedies to healthy roots. I found a tea recipe for hydroponic grows. However, the thread was from 2011. When I went to look for the ingredients, one of the items no longer exist and one other is different than original.

Here is the tea:
1. Mycogrow soluble (varies greatly),
2. ZHO Powder (no longer exist by the maker, but states its mycorrhizal fungi), and
3. Ancient Forest EWC - obviously has many different makers, but no longer in the Ancient Forest variety.

My question is this: Would the Hydroguard I'm about to add be basically the same? Is it the replacement? When searching, Hydroguard and Great White both come up constantly.

As an update, I changed out my air stones and pump. I had 3 4x2 stones in my flower tent not being used. I also had 2 1x2 stones still in packages. No more Wallyworld stone rails. Since I'm presently only using 3 buckets in flower, I switched my 32w pump (veg tent) with the 50w (flower tent). The 50w is now supplying air to the 5 in veg and the 32w does the 3 in flower (I closed the other 3 ports to up the output). As of this morning, all the girls look happy.

Now if Amazon would hurry up with my Hydroguard! I just got an update saying it should be here between an hour ago and the next 2 - along with some other goodies.

Rez temps, you never said what they are, do you know?
don't look for some kind of product to keep it away. It's all about dissolved oxygen or DO when doing DWC
DO is directly proportional to water temps, more air won't help when the water just can't hold any more DO

Sorry. Rez temps are 63.5 to 64.5 on average - depends on the outside weather temps. But i have never noticed anytime above 66. But, has been as low as 62.5.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is the active ingredient @ .038%. Dosages 2 ml per gallon. 430 doses in a bottle

I was amazed at how fast the root growth was after using it. It became part of my plant regimen on each nute change since. I hope it works as well for you. It came highly recommended by growers I respect.

So I found a "tea" recipe that was based off the one from 2011 I saw. It uses Hydroguard, Great White and EWC. So, I've placed an order for the other 2 ingredients and they will be here Friday - supposedly Prime but I guess due to the holiday.

The Hydroguard is hopefully working. The roots look more brown but separated, no slime at all. And theres a lot of new white roots popping out. I don't want to lose this plant. It's the only CBD strain I have going. I planned on making pills and edibles out of it for during the work day. It was doing so well up until the nute change, then boom! Crazy how fast it came on. There were no signs i noticed prior on this plant. The Power Plant had some signs, brown roots, but it has since basically cleared up with the Hydroguard over night. I will definitely be using this stuff for now on.

For some reason the plant droops by the end of the day/night and somewhat recovers/perks up in the morning.

I'm hoping I caught this early enough. I think the Hydroguard has helped immensely. Today, the plant was perky and bursting with new root growth - like 50-100 white hairs hanging down and from the sides of the net. The Great White and EWC wont be here until Friday, then 48 hours of brewing. So, no tea until Sunday at the earliest. Coincidentally that's the day of my reservoir change. I'm hoping the tea will get rid of any dead matter and help keep the new roots going strong.

Got home from the dog park to find my Great White had arrived. Gonna start on my "tea" after dinner.

So the tea is like magic - root bleach! All plants are doing well again. Even new issues that arouse have been addressed with the tea.

I do have a question though. After checking the root system on a couple plants, I initially had a scare. There was a mass of black stuff on the roots. This was on both plants in veg. However, after dropping the net back in the bucket to grab my camera/phone, when I picked it up again it was gone. It washed away, back into the nute water. I have since been rinsing off what I can daily. One is about completely clean and growing like crazy, the other is on it's way to being clean and also growing nicely.

Any idea what this might be? Remnants of the EWC maybe?

I had the same thing but with perlite involved with the crud. What I observed was that my damaged roots still were somewhat sticky. The perlite became caught in the brown roots tangling several clumps of roots tightly together. I tried as gently as possible to untangle them, removing the perlite. The perlite also caused the roots to once again to not get adequate oxygen. it reminded me of my dogs getting burrs tangled in their fur. I showered the roots, eventually took out a knife and gave my two girls a rooted Brazilian haircut. I folar sprayed them through the next week, cleaned the buckets, airstones etc, replaced the nutes and hydroguard. They pulled through.

A nute change out may be in order. Try to check how solid and firm the brown roots are. That will give you a feel for what to do. In your case, that some crud was caught but freed itself sounds good. I would think about a goldfish net to clean out the bucket or some pour -through filter to remove the free floating crud should work. (My bucket is 17 gals, ?65 liters? ) If you get radical on the roots like I did, you will put your grow back a week or two. I suspect that if I did the same cutting over a few sessions, letting some recovery between sessions, I would have done better. And not had to treat them in intensive care folar sprays 3times a day.

I'm on my first grow. I sprouted seeds in perlite but never cleaned all the perlite when moving the seedling to a bucket. That won't happen again.

I added much better air stones and cured a lot of problems. I'm changing over to bio buckets to get away from clogged air stones from strangling my plants. I'm waiting for a pump and parts to be delivered now.I

I looked closer at your pictures. I suggest getting some aluminum duct tape and cover your bottom buckets. Root water loves to grow algae. Algae needs light to grow. An alternative is to paint the bucket black. Your bubbles look great.

You may be able to clean out roots with a spray shower. I did that to mine until I gave up and hacked up my roots. Mine were worse to start, fwiw.
