Yes, like your memory, the barrels have holes in them, lol.
I also read that peat gets more acidic over time, but that doesn’t necessarily make sense to me.
How many thousands of years does peat lay under ground before it is dug up and put in bags?
What would cause it to get more acidic after doing so?
I say it’s just as good as it ever was after getting flushed with rain water for several months.
Either way, I am super happy with the results I have experienced thus far.
All you need to get started is 3 plastic barrels with holes drilled in the bottom.
Once you have two of them completely full, start using dirt from the 1st one, while you are filling up the 3rd.
Then, you just simply keep the rotation going.
It’s easy to see that not a one of my plants are mad about it, so I say win win.
😂
I don’t grow enough to have 3 55 gallon drums of soil but I can see modifying the process and using 5 gallon buckets(maybe 6 and rotating 3 and 3). I think peat is acidic in bogs which is why bodies buried in bogs mummify. Maybe peat cut from bogs gets washed with some kind of alkaline water before sale? Whatever the reason, I like not having to buy bags of dirt.

Yes I have 2 barrells just sitting in my yard now. We dont get rain I would have to flush myself. Right now I just flush the pots At least once a week.

Here I was thinking you might be one of the people on here that this would work for, lack of rain didn’t dawn on me until you mentioned it.
I would still give it a try, and just flush the barrels once a week.
I had my doubts about this as well, but I believe it would be worth your effort, especially considering what you have to pay for soil in your area.

It takes me forever to go through a 55 gallon barrel, but the longer it takes to empty one, is the longer the one on deck is flushed, which is my main priority.
If I had to take a guess, I bet it takes a good 4 months for me to go through one barrel.
The first one didn’t last that long because I ended up using some of it on my garden.
The next time I switch barrels, I will write the date on it with a sharpie.

I am going to try it. I already have 2 barrels sitting around. F’in hoarder sister brought them here. She Said I could use them. I have tools in one and dirty grow bags in the other.

Just sampled this Freak Show that I chopped a couple weeks ago.
I am impressed.
Smooth, excellent flavor, and I am HAF.
I really wasn’t expecting to like it this much.

I am happy it wasn’t disappointing. Break out your axe and crank up your Spark. I had creative juices flowing from that Freakshow bud.

Lol, that’s the first thing I did after I made that post!
Played for over an hour. You ain’t kidding, it’s awesome guitar weed.
I am pretty sure that’s the best I have ever played.

I know I have brought this up before, and when I first came up with this idea, I ran it by everyone on here.
The general consensus was that this would work, and it has worked very well.
Once more, I would like to give a run down, because this is saving me a $hit ton of money, which boils down to efficiency, which I believe, as y’all may have figured out from a reply I just left on a different thread a couple of minutes ago, is one of my main goals.

First, let’s look at my plants, because they are exhibit A.
I think everyone would agree that they are the perfect picture of health.
No issues.

I have been recycling the peat/perlite mixture I grow in.
The barrels you see setting under the eave of this shed get continuously flushed with every rain.

The barrel that I am currently sourcing my grow medium from, is the 2nd one I have filled, so I assure you, every plant in my grow, is growing in recycled peat.

This barrel is full, and next in line to be sourced from. View attachment 363877
This barrel is the one I am currently filling.
I was a little concerned at first, that I may be inviting severe gnat issues into my grow.
I have had zero issues with that concern, due to the fact that the top few inches of the peat consistently stays too dry for the larvae to thrive.
I have not bought any peat in several months.
My only expenses right now are Jacks, epsom, calcium nitrate, and electricity.
Considering that a 5 lb. bag each of epsom and calnit will probably last me the rest of my life, lol, and the cost of Jacks is next to nothing, well, I believe I have dialed my grow in to be about as efficient as it is gonna get.
Keep in mind, I did say about………..
I got a couple more ideas, lol.
Are you using Jacks 20-20-20 and if so how much gallon ?? Ditto epsom salt and calcium nitrate ? Thanks

I keep 4 jugs in the grow room.
One is straight water.
One is CalMag=1/2 teaspoon of Calcium Nitrate, 1/4 teaspoon of Epsom.
I run a couple cups of HOT water into my jug. Add 1/2 teaspoon of Calcium Nitrate. Shake until dissolved.
Add 1/4 teaspoon or Epsom.
Shake until dissolved.
Then finish filling the jug with cold water.
One is Jacks Classic 20-20-20, 1/2 teaspoon per gallon.
One is Jacks Bloom Booster 10-30-20, 1/2 teaspoon per gallon.

I have started using 1/4 tsp of each

With that being said, I believe everyone has read where I mentioned I source my water from a spring in the woods behind my house.
This jumbled pile of limestone rocks is where the spring comes out of the ground.
IMG_6602.png

In this pool of water, about 50 yards below the beginning of the spring, I have a submersible pump, which is where I pump my water from.
It’s kind of stagnant right now, but I will have plenty of fresh clean water after the wet season sets in.
From there, I pump water into a cistern, which supplies my house.
Considering the fact that the water flows out of a vein of limestone, I would say that my water is probably high in calcium.
My plants still do well on the 2 to 1 ratio, but I think that needs to be taken into consideration.
