Light question

Weed is hard to get where I live and it's quite expensive. I decided to start growing my own little farm. I got 4 seeds from a friend, did the germination, planted them for about 3 days. They are like 1 cm tall. (Been growing on my balcony)

I bought a 18W neon tube (white, cool light) and I found a place where I can install it. I don't know how much lumens it gives... (i'm guessing 1050 based on what I read on an online store)

So, my question is... the my neon is good for growing?

(I don't have a very big budget so I want to stick on fluorescent lighting - saving on the power bill.)

hey tibby welcome to the world of growing

Ok to start with you are gonna need 5000 lumens per square ft

so depending on your grow space will determine how many lights you need

also instead of buying flos ,,why dont you opt for a hps security light ,,and with a little diy ,,(its easy i did it and a newbie still) you will have the better lighting (there wont be much diffrence in price)

My grow "room" is about 10 square ft.

I read very much about growing indoors and saw about hps security light. I'm not from the US and I don't have a clue how to translate that in romanian (it sound silly) so I could look it up on the web or even ask at a store. I have no one else to ask since I'm the single "grower" I know.

Do HPS lamps generate much heat?

I could order from the US but the shipping fee will be ... high. So that's also a motive why I chose neons...

I don't really want to grow them really really fast as I and a friend will smoke it and we are "casual" smokers. (People here aren't very open minded about smoking pot... so we have to hide even from other friends that don't like the idea of smoking it.)

Some growers use fluorescent with very good results. But you would need a much larger wattage then just 18 watts. 54 watt t-5 are nice
All lights produce heat. if I had 10sqft I would go with a High Pressure Sodium light of 400 watts and you will get nice buds

An 18W fluorescent (I hope you mean fluorescent and not neon) is just a tiny fraction of what you are going to need. It probably puts out around 1000 lumens. So for 10 sq ft you need 50,000 lumens, so you would need 50 of these 18 W lights in your 10 sq ft space.....or 1 400W HPS

Hey tibbyi Welcome ;

if your in Europe you can order from Germany , and HPS lights are available everywere , and it produces much heat yes . However , if you use HPS with a cooltube then you will have nearly no heat , im using a cooltube HPS and i can put my wrist touching oon the cooltube glass without feeling any signs of spiked heat.

Thank you all for your replys. Unfortunately the grow space I had in mind isn't available anymore because I realised that I'm not the only one that wants it. So I wouldn't want to grow weed for strangers... and for free.

I have to grow them in my house and figure out how (and very fast). I can't leave them on the balcony for much longer.
