Before you start bombing on me for not going out and spending a bunch on the best potting soil/ soil amendments like perlite, vermiculite, not to mention expensive fertilizers... I would like to say that I barely have enough money to feed my family with the best, let alone my plants. Yet my love of the herb has been one of THE biggest parts of my life since I was 12 years old (believe me, I know they deserve the best) and since then I've wanted to grow my own crop... So this is what I did :
We had a very sucessful vegatble garden about 5 years ago. Things were better so we had some very nice, rich potting soil, although then it was packed with nasty fertilizers. It since has been leached and broken down over these past years into the blackest, loamiest soil I've seen in NY (which has decent soil to begin with) I amended it about 40 % with 2 inches of pebbles on bottom for drainage, plus mixed in with mulch + newpaper shreds for airation ( as advised for low cost grows or guerilla gorwing in the Horticulture Bible)
For nutrients I will be using Humboldt Nutrients: Grow and FoxFarm's Tigerbloom. (I mentioned a possible grow to the ONE person I'd trust, a smoking buddy of 10 years, who one day showed up with these and told me not to ask any questions)
I would have liked to order from Mandala, due to great prices but I didnt have time this season so used some of my VERY best bagseed.
I planted 5 plants in the middle of a hollowed out black berry patch to deter neighbors and pests.
Any helpful advice or critism would be highly appreciated. I love my little seedlings with all my heart, I care about them like I do my children. Like any parent I want whats best for them and mourn that I cannot afford more for them. Please Help me with whatever advice you can...
