Two thermostats have done the same thing. Friend at work said he had this same issue on the same engine once. Said they finally did a head gasket and that fixed it. Even though it didn’t have the symptoms for a failed head gasket.

The Old Hen had a Buick that she bought brand new. Had that Pontiac inline 4 in it. Got 30K miles on it and I checked the oil just to find that frothy stuff on the dipstick. Blown head gasket? Took it back to the dealer and they put a brand new engine in it with a 50K guarantee. 40K down the line, same problem. Took it back and they replaced the entire engine again. Happened the third time. The replaced the engine and we got another 50K guarantee. Old Hen was pissed and wanted to get rid of it. I told her as long as we got a new engine every 40K or so, I'd keep it 'til it rusted into the ground. Wound up selling it with damn near 200K on it. Last I knew, it was still running.
