We use to remove our thermostats in the summer to keep our engines from overheating.
And yeah trash in the heater core can keep enough coolant from flowing through the block.

The Old Man bought a brand new pickup truck one late fall/early winter. He had a load of stuff to take out to a job but didn't have the time, so he asked me if I'd do it. Sure. Liked to froze my ass off. Told him about it and he laughed and said it never did get warm. I went up to the local auto parts store and bought a new thermostat and changed it in his driveway. He was a happy camper when he used it the next time. Brand new truck with a thermostat that came outta the factory stuck wide open.
He shoulda just taken it back to the dealership, but in construction, time is money.

Good morning, Misfits! Warmer today but with the rain you'd never notice. Had the world leaf free yesterday. Not so much today. Front looks good, but the back yard on the west side isn't quite covered, but it needs cleaned again. Ain't doing it in the rain.
Think I'll run the van up to the muffler shop. I haven't driven it in a month 'cause it's embarrassingly loud. No sense in plating and insuring it if I'm not driving it and besides, I like it. Cheap on gas and handles well unless it's super windy.

I tested for combustion gas last summer. Negative. Air pocket is possible but I vacuum filled the system last time it was opened. It’s been getting progressively worse over the course of 5-6k miles.

Anyone ever use stop leak in the system
That crap will F**k it up for sure, But you dropped in new radiator correct?
OK doe it have the fan shroud still in place, I had a car that would always run hot in traffic sitting because the shroud was broken.

Medical transport picked us up at 9:30 and we got here a few minutes before 11:00, which is her appointment time. Now comes the waiting room, for God knows how long. Then the hour and a half ride back. Will be ready to smoke multiple bowls upon return

Has fans mounted to the radiator. Has integrated shroud on fans. No stop leak. I’ve owned this car for ten years and 120k miles. She’s at 270k now. It’s not dependent on vehicle speed. Engine speed makes the difference. Gets hot, rev it up and it cools back down. Even sitting still.
It’s blowing my mind. I’m no superstar but I’ve been a Ford certified master tech for 6 years, 11 years total time. Crazy that it’s still got me stumped.

Has fans mounted to the radiator. Has integrated shroud on fans. No stop leak. I’ve owned this car for ten years and 120k miles. She’s at 270k now. It’s not dependent on vehicle speed. Engine speed makes the difference. Gets hot, rev it up and it cools back down. Even sitting still.
It’s blowing my mind. I’m no superstar but I’ve been a Ford certified master tech for 6 years, 11 years total time. Crazy that it’s still got me stumped.

Just maybe even though the water pump appeared good it was worn down enough to decrease water flow over the yrs use daily.

The volume of coolant circulated depends on back pressure, so one possibility is that the cooling system has a restriction somewhere. As you bought it used, you only have maintenance history after 120K miles. Have you ever power flushed it.

Besides water flow, you need air flow, which is low at idle and depends on the fan. A fix might be an electric fan.

My first Sunbeam Tiger overheated at idle, and I got some emergency relief when stuck in traffic by turning on the heater full blast to aid the radiator.

Maybe get a prescription for Statins break up some of them clogs

Weird.
I ain’t no great mechanic, but it sure seems like it has to be related to the water pump, or thermostat.
What drives the pump?
I kinda assume it’s the timing belt/chain, considering you said you got your timing off a tooth.
Not sure if you replaced the water pump with a new one, or pulled the old one, inspected it, and reinstalled.
If the latter is the case, are you sure that the pulley that drives the pump isn’t slipping on the shaft?
