I love Gnatrol and its cheap in the dried form.
Sand works well but you need room for at least 2" and watering/aeration can become an issue.

cut a 2 liter bottle in half, invert and insert top into bottom half to make a funnel, pour in applecider vinegar. will remove gnats in a week
