So, I wanted to avoid this until I could post a grow journal, but I've launched my first grow recently. It's been going on for a little over a week. Out of 10 seeds, I've had 6 come up (without germination; I just popped them into the soil). Of those 6, I have a couple sprouts that are "hanging over." I've packed the soil around the base of the stem as gently but firmly as I could to try to give them more support so that they stand straight up, but it seems to no avail. What's up with these little ones? They're fairly tall for their age, 1 week, and I think they may have stretched a little too far before I moved them all closer to the light earlier in the week.

Is it normal? Have I overwatered? Are they just too stretched with not enough support?

What kind of light are you using...... can you add more soil around them?

There's a half inch of room between the base of the stem and the top of each solo cup. Also, I'm using a 400w HPS light. I know HPS isn't the best for vegging, but I haven't read anything warning to indefinitely stay away from HPS for vegging. So, rather than spend more money on fluoro's or mh's, I figured we'd just start this time around with the HPS and buy the fluoro when we harvest. Would the light be causing this? Maybe heat stress? I'm still working on getting the temps down in the closet a bit more... they're idling in the low to mid 80s.

For the time being, until I receive a definitive answer, I've carefully popped them up against a couple paper clips.

Also, when should I be looking to transplant these into their grow bags? Right now theyre at 10 days, and I highly doubt they'll be rootbound within the next upcoming weeks?

I'm still not sure what I want to transplant them into. I was thinking the fabric grocery bags that people use with success as smart pots would be a good idea; however, they look to hold about 5 gallons, and I want to put these in 3 gallon, if at all possible. I'm sure I could sew them up to be 3's, if I wanted to, but I'm really just looking for some input on containers. Mind you I'm in a Miracle Grow Seed Starter/Perlite mix right now. When I transplant, I'll be moving them into a Fox Farm Ocean Forest/perlite/lime mix.

How far away is the light? You can veg with a HPS, i do with a 600w. Normally start them under a couple CFLs till they have there true leaves developed a little.
I have noticed that seedlings do stretch allot under HPS if you cant keep it as close as possible. Plants will always grow towards the brightest point.

You have any pictures? There holes in the bottom of the cups?

Yes, holes are in the bottom of the cups. I'll post pictures shortly. Right now, they're about a foot away from the light. I didn't want to burn them. Should I move them up closer?

This is the problem i found with using my hps ime, Keep it too close and you bleach or burn the leaves, keep it too far they stretch rather bad. Need to find that just the right hight.
If you can keep the heat to a minimum then you can try that. Best we see some pictures 1st incase that is not the issue. If its floppy it could be overwatering.

Geotagging is off, for those who noticed these came from a cell phone.

from the moment my seed break the grow they are as close to the light as possible.

putting the right in the soil is "germinating" them, its the way i do it, imo its the best way, thats not the problem.

what you want to do is transplant them and bury the stem pretty much till like half a inch is left and get those lights as close as possible.

Make sure you click attachment at the top of the reply box and add the photos.

Like Puffin said best off burying it before anything else before it breaks

Thanks PN. :)) Care to offer any advise on....?:

Also, I'm working on getting those pics uploaded. Never before seen a PHP application as much a pain in the arse as this one. :p

pictures are easy to upload ;) just read the sizes and mb to each picture format on the manage attachment pop-up. i personally use .png and make sure its under 1200x1200. usually like 1100x900.

im not a fan of smart pots anymore, i have 5 in veg now that are all going to be cut out of the bags and into normal buckets. they just dry out too fast for me, a pita to water without setting up a kind of spill pan i guess you could call it. jsut not for me anyore. i do have a smaller size though (2gal) bigger probably alot better.

Well, the pictures aren't uploading. I'm at a loss for how to do it. I've tried both in IE and Firefox, even using the tutorial provided after I got frustrated. The tutorial seems to be outdated.

This is what I received. Instead of it showing the files that I had uploaded, as shown by the pics in the tutorial. If you can't click those links, I'll tinypic the pictures.

If you don't know tinypic, you're behind on the times. Links are safe.

All the pics I'm trying to upload are within the size and dimension regulations.

yeah the only issue you are having is they are severly lacking light and tipping over.

i read you are vegging with hps? do you have a aircooled hood? im able to get auto sprouts that ive vegged uder hps inches fromt he light with a aircooled. my photoperiods get the T5 system since they veg longer.

and those links link to my gallery.... are you giving them enough time to upload, after you click the upload button you have to wait for them to show up on the manage attachment page before closeing.

All you should have to do is click "manage attachments" - Choose files - click "upload" - Once upload done they will show them at the bottom of upload window - then go back to the reply box and click the paperclip and attach it to the reply box if it doesnt do it automatically

I water everday, so that may not be a bad idea for me. I was under the impression that I'd probably be needing a spill pan either way, Maybe I could consider 5 gallons buckets. That'll give me some more room than working with the rectangular bags. Or I could just say screw it and go with the 2-3 gallon. I'm only putting 4-5 of these ladies in the closet. Any others are going to a friend's tent.

No problem. I would stop uploading pictures that that site though. If you read there privacy policy they collect your IP address and is a part of Photobucket based in US. That means if the LEO want you IP address they can get it.
