Loo sorry to hear, I dropped over 20grand on my last dog to find I was dealing with inoperable Brain tumor.
I would have donated him a kidney if I had too, he was my baby.
I found this which helps explain what the vet is talking about (spells it out)
Things to consider Age of pet, health of pet before the blockage occurred ( how far into the cats life ).
Sometimes if you have one near you The Vet schools do cheaper procedures to allow the students to learn, but sounds like you are in a true emergency situation now. Maybe the vet can place caterer to relieve the problem for short time while you see if you can find cheaper solution to her problem.
Hard decision to make Brother I feel for you.

Good news!!!!!
So, here is how the day of events unfolded.
I went to the first vet location and they told me they were not accepting new clients at this time.....
So off to the next.
Went to the second place. They did an x-ray and blood work but could not do a ultrasound. Cost $275.
They referred us to a place that could do the ultrasound and they wanted $3,800 for a catheter put in, and $4,000 for the surgery. I knew I was not in the position to pay $8,000 for the procedure so they told me the only other option was to euthanize her. I lost my ****. Skittles is only 5 and sleeps in my arms every night. I was a complete wreck. I spoke to my brother who told me he had his dog put down at another location for half the price this office wanted. I left and headed to the office with my cat's fate minutes away. The ride there was rough to say the least.
I walked in and explained I needed to have Skittles put down. They even weighed her to find out how much of the drug they needed. But it wasn't over for her just yet!
The lady vet came in and was pondered how a female cat at the age of 5 was in her office to get euthanized.
I was her just standing there in her thoughts and was wondering to myself if there was an option to try and save my cat. I explained the cost the other office wanted which she thought was ridiculous. I told her I was willing to spend $1,000 to try anything. She asked if she could try and put a catheter in her, and it would cost me $300. I agreed. She made no promised as she said if the catheter does not go in there may be a cyst or tumor blocking her urethra. So, we rolled the dice and I waited for a phone call.
4 hours later she called. She was able to get the catheter in. She then flushed her bladder several times and there were small stones. She stated that she would like to keep the catheter in for a few days to let her bladder go back to normal size and hopefully flush out any other remaining stones. She said she would then recommend a specific diet to feed Skittles that would disintegrate any other stones she may get over time. She told me she thinks Skittles was going to be okay and that the total cost would be under $1,000. I was more than grateful for her efforts. Seems her and my brother saved my cats life.
Skittles will be in their care for the next few days. hopefully ready to come home healthy and happy. Maui her sister, (our white lab) has been showing signs that she is looking for her.
So, all in all through the emotions I cannot complain. What a rollercoaster.

Yay. I’m so glad the nice vet was willing to help you. I’m sure skittles is already relieved And comfortable. Will be a nice homecoming. Don’t be surprised if Maui doesn’t recognize her at first. She will smell like the vet and not her sister… So glad your kitty is getting better 💕

I love my pets but if it cost more than a few hundred bucks I ain’t fixing it. I guess I’m just stuck in the old ways. Not a popular opinion, I’m sure. It that’s how it is at the Dog house
Same here. I'm not spending that kinda of money on a pet. Some ppl have enough money that it's no big deal. But to me and the Wife that's money that can go towards my grandkids education and such. My grandkids are more important to me than a pet.
My truck, car, and house are paid for. If my truck goes down I'm looking at about 6 grand to drop another motor in it where I can get my *** to work. If I spend that money I am fked and down to one vehicle. To each his own. If you have 10 to 20 grand to drop on a pet, that's awesome but not realistic for most families. Especially if you have kids or grandkids like a lot of ppl do.

If you are on any other social media or know someone who is, you should go scorched earth on the vet that was trying to rob you of $8000. My first thought was I would want to go beat the fk out of the theiving vet but that would wind up costing a lot in legal costs. Those fkers would have killed your cat when she may just need a different good. WTF! I am happy for you.

If it comes down to saving my cat or feeding my family, I'd pull the plug on my cat.

I too would have my limits. I take very good care of my pets and those of us that have them know they can get pretty expensive just for food and vet bills if they are healthy. For sure tho I would go over the limit to save my family if there were a good chance and it was not taking the rent money so to say…well maybe a little of the rent money…my pets are more than family so I understand both sides here.

Yeah, I asked my brother if he would do it rather than paying those ********. He was hesitant...
Every person has different financial situations. I don't think it has to do with how much you love your animals at all. The fact that you take care of them in the first place shows the compassion you have.
Even if I had the 8k to just throw away I would have had a really hard time understanding why it would cost so much for any procedure on a cat. but that is just me. Like I said, Skittles sleeps on my arm every single night. She is my baby girl, but everyone has a limit.
Thank you all for being here in this time. Hopefully she pulls out of this and is happier than ever!!!
And yes, in due time the 8k quoted vet will be hearing about this story though social media and from my bank when I dispute the charges. They also said they did an ultrasound, but when the current vet asked for it they said they did not.
Here is to all of our animals that we love and consider our family!!!!

Wow great news. Just like our doctors. It matters who you go to. Several years back our Great Dane got sick at five years old. The vet had seen him since he was a puppy. He was always the star of the show.
Vet told us it was time. We could dump money in, and probably not make a difference. Anyone else would have played our emotions and bled us dry. My best friend when I was a kid was my dog. I got him on my third birthday and we did everything together. Roamed the woods. Played in the creek. Ate from the same sandwiches. He got cancer when I was 11, my dad spent loads of money we didn’t have and in the end he died anyway. That’s when I learned that you just have to be realistic about a pet. We buried Blackie in the woods and it was the first time I’d seen my father cry. to this day when I pass that fork in the woods a lump hits me throat. Hell I’m tearing up now just talking about it. Everyone we love dies in the end. It’s just a matter of if we live long enough to see it.

It’s cool. Fact of life. We don’t have to like it. But it’s going to happen. Unless we pass on first. Watching my parents get older. They are still young enough, early 60’s. But I remember when I was a boy my dad was Superman. He was invincible. Ageless. Now I see him aging and weaker than I am. And I see the same look in my boys eyes that I used to have. Life is a lot shorter than we first realize. But enough of this. Hijacking the thread.

Never hijacking friend. :)

Glad to hear everything worked out for the best, and it sounds like you found a new vet, to boot.
I suggested early on that she may be passing a stone.
The reason for that is, I often pass bladder stones myself. Spiky little things they are. Get stuck a lot along the way out, makes you feel like you have to pee all the time. They cause little muscle spasms, that constrict and squeeze the little spiky varmints even tighter. That’ll cause a twinge, I tell ya.
My guess is, she would have passed it in a day or two, and been none the worse for wear.
Of course, you couldn’t know for sure until you took her to the vet, but I was pretty sure I recognized the look on her face.

Yeah, i have a feeling she has been dealing with this for some time and I never noticed it was an issue. She would go over to dirty clothes by the washer and crouch over it as to pee and I would yell at her. She was trying to tell me she was hurting. I will be much more observational in the future. I hope I never have to deal with kidney stones.

Her trying to pee on your dirty clothes has nothing to do with that. Pets often try to go to the bathroom on dirty clothes because they can smell traces of urine and skid marks. They figure if it was a good enough spot for you, they might as well use it to.
