i am stocking up on supplys for my next grow, i will be useing foxfarm ocean forest soil and would like to mix it with something else that can help to hold the water a little better what soil would you recommend or is it best used alone?

It works just fine alone.

I add perlite myself

you dont want it to hold the water, the faster it dries out, the sooner you can feed them again, jmo

as Duck said, add perlite to assist with drainage and help it dry out FASTER.

I started out using FFOF soil because of all the talk about it in here. I am now using ProMix. I didn't like the way FFOF retains liquid. I was only watering/feeding once a week, as it took that long for the pots to dry out. The ProMix drains very nice. I am watering/feeding every three days now, and I appreciate the control of nutrients this allows. LMO

Peace

Dense soil that retains water and doesn't drain and or dry out is something you definitely want to avoid. When your soil has a nice wet/dry cycle going your plants will thrive. The roots will search out water and you get nice vigorous growth. I also can't get Pro Mix near me...I looked online but shipping charges made it a no go. If you find some online at a good price let me know. I have been wanting to try it myself.

I agree with Hampsterlewis...the shipping costs alone would kill me..they sell it at the Hydro shops here and is a bit spendy...may I sugest you go to your local nursery...where you go buy your fruit trees...buy the Local "Poting /container" soil..and be sure its organic..thats what I started with..than started making my own...Best of mojo at you

take care and be safe

I use ffof and used it straigh for years. I have to water every other day. It drains well. I use smart pots however. Now the old ffof is the base for my super soil. I think it has lots of perlite in it.

imo---i prefer roots organic as a base soil---fox farms will work just fine---follow what the duck said---add more perlite to the bagged soil---they never use enough for my liking cause i add other stuff too---it retains moisture, aerates, and will help with your wet dry cycles consistency ;)

I Used Pro-mix last year for the first time. It was the bx+, Im sold! I add dolomite and water with mollasses. This is my base soil. I then build it up with organic goodies.

Props for posting, Skullcandy, and props to folks who replied. I have been using FFOF but I am thinking of adding perlite to it. What is the ideal ratio of perlite to FFOF?

I tried FFIF twice and both times it burned my plants and "clumped" into hard balls. Switched to FF 'Happy Frog' 80% mixed with FF "Soil Conditioner" 20% and never looked back. Drains well, easy to mix, plants just love it. I have maybe 8 different strains in that mix right now, zero deficiencies or problems.
