You can use molasses to make additional EM from the EM you have. It is a way of stretching the bottle you buy. You can use something like 2 oz of EM and 2 oz of molasses with 28 oz of water to make an additional quart of EM(don’t quote me on the numbers-I think those are about right). That way you get 16 quarts of EM from a single quart that you purchase.
Its thinking such as this that put men on the moon , frugally...

Is the aim of quadralining to get 4 colas per plant or do you top the 4 branches to get 8 colas?

If I understand the process correctly you continue to train the four branches out like a perfect plus sign and top the nodes that grow out from these branches. It sounds like you also top the nodes that grow off these four branches. So I believe you are correct about 8 tops at least.

A few photos to help explain what a proper quadline looks like. I’m learning as I go on this, but I didn’t want to do another SCROG. This Seems like a low stress plant training technique to maintain a relatively even canopy without using a SCROG net.

If I can quote “420 Magazine”
“ Quadlining started a couple of years ago when I was trying to come up with a training method to get a good, low, even shape to the plants without slowing them down too much. Fluxing took way too long to perform and Mainlining also took a long time in veg to accomplish. Neither seemed like good fits for what I was trying to achieve. Instead I took a combination of both training methods and made quadlining. I've always said it isn't rocket science and it isn't anything brand new but I've put them together and created a system to allow aggressive growth without slowing the plants down much at all. It redistributes energy to focus on 4 main support branches and tries not to waste energy on things that will not amount to anything in the end. It also achieves a nice, even canopy with good spacing for airflow and light to penetrate decreasing the chance of mold and problems while increasing yield. Keeping them low also allows for growing in tight spaces or with height restrictions like most indoor growing. These were all the goals I wanted to achieve and quadlining does just that.”

Today is the end of week 5 veg and the plants are ready for the larger tent. I shut down the veg tent, rewired and cleaned the flower tent, and moved everything over.

Plants were looking too tight in the 2x2 veg tent, so they’re now in the 2x4. I also transplanted the LA Peyote Kush from a one gallon to a two gallon container. She’s just a backup in case my quadline training fails with one of the other plants.

The Purple Ghost Candy doesn’t seem to appreciate the low stress training. She’s looking a little limp.

I am using an AC Infinity wick system this time. It uses wicks to keep the bottom third of the fiber pots damp. I’ve read great reviews on the self watering pots, but I do have concerns with the wicks getting clogged due to salts. I will use for veg….might transition to normal runoff containers in flower.

Looks like you are doing great with the quad lining. I was actually getting ready to try that.

I ran a Purple Ghost Candy a couple months ago. It is now my wife’s favorite.
I super cropped it and never had any issues.

Shes beautiful! I hope to duplicate that!

My Purple Ghost Candy was a little damaged during my training and she’s not looking too healthy. I’ll post an update tomorrow with her damaged limb. Glad to hear she’s worth keeping…..looking forward to something new and different.

Welcome to week 6 since popping the soil. I’m still “Quadlining” these plants. I broke one of the four branches on the Purple Ghost Candy last week and I’m kicking myself. I had hoped she would heal. The Plants are being trained into an X shape and the nodes along each branch are encouraged to grow vertically. I’ll top those nodes at least once.

Still misting with Seaweed Extract, EM1 and CaliMagic with RO water. Added water to the self-watering bases so start the process of wicking water.

EM-1 has added a unique odor to my grow room….it’s not a pleasant smell. I may not reorder again…..

I’ve decided to grow out my backup plant….for a whopping total of 3 plants

I was going to suggest growing the third plant out but I don’t like to meddle. Glad you decided to grow it out though. If the EM smell is unpleasant, just use it as a drench. You won’t smell it any more. As I said earlier, my wife was not happy when I tried it as a deodorizer. It is not that despite what the website says. ;)

Hey OldFogey….you are always free to meddle if so inclined. lol. I always welcome new ideas and I’m usually bored enough to try new things. Plus I still have a lot to learn. You and BigSur (and others) have been really helpful and I appreciate it. My entire feed schedule using the Lucas formula and EM-1 was learned here. So thanks for everything!

When I was a teenager, I drove a dump truck to our local landfill frequently. The smell of EM-1 reminds me of that local landfill refuse smell….in July! I just need to suck it up and learn to appreciate the distinct aroma that is EM-1.

I’ll likely move all three under the one light later today or tomorrow. I might be able to veg all three together for a while to save energy,

Today is another step in this Quadline plant training that I’ve been reading up on. This is nothing too revolutionary, but I like seeing a formal topping and training process. For each branch, I am instructed to remove the inward facing fan leaves that are likely blocking nodes/bud sites. I removed four leaves (one per branch) from the LA Peyote Kush and Godfather OG. I only found two leaves on the Purple Ghost Candy (she only has 3 branches anyway). Here is the LA Peyote Kush.

Godfather OG is proving to be the bushiest plant. I might move her to the short 2x2 tent if she remains short.

And here is the Purple Ghost Candy. The plant that I was most excited about is looking the worst. She can still bounce back…but losing a key branch didn’t help. She is stretching more than the other two.

Next steps…..keep moving the training spikes to spread out the four branches in an X shape. Keep leaves from blocking bud sites by tucking or defoliating leaves. Closely monitor when I can stop watering from the top. (this wick system moistens the bottom 1/3 of the pot. My roots probably don’t reach that yet)

It’s been almost a week since I updated this journal, so a few quick photos to show progress. I’ve been ignoring them too much this past week. The AC Infinity self-watering bases are really working great and allowed me to ignore the garden for 3-4 days.

Here is the Seedsman LA Peyote Kush

Godfather OG below…
Definitely needs some defoliation.

I will spend the afternoon defoliating and possibly topping a few nodes.

Today I decided to use a Scrog net for the smaller tent since the tent is so short. I also have a really ugly plant that I can hide behind a scrog. 😀. My Purple Ghost Candy, with its broken limb and scraggly branches, will benefit from the net structure. I believe she is heavier Sativa (60%) than the other two plants too. Definitely growing differently than anything else I’ve grown.

The tent is only 5 feet tall and the light is as high as possible right now….16 inches above the canopy. Hoping I can control her upward growth.

Increased her feed using the Lucas formula since she’s light green….now at 5ml Micro and 10ml Bloom per gallon.

It’s six degrees below zero outside, so the warmth and brightness of the LED and tent is appreciated even more today. Miss my old HID lighting on these days.

Time for another update on the Purple Ghost Candy….the plant that I converted to SCROG. She’s a Sativa-leaning plant in a 48” tent.

I will start flowering today. Since she is now under a SCROG net and will be difficult to move, I decided to remove the AC Infinity self-watering wick base. I will water this plant traditionally from the top. I wouldn’t be able to remove the reservoir for regular cleanings if I left it in place. No water or nutrients needed. Reservoir water was at 850ppm and 7.0 ph when I removed it.

Self watering bases with 1/4 inch wicks shown below. I really liked them based on a limited experience. I will continue to use them in the 2x4 tent. They could benefit from a “testing hole” where you could drop your ph pen or PPM meter into the well to check the reservoir without removing the plant. I’m going to get out the dremel tool and play with it on my spare unit.

I’m flipping this small 2x2 tent to flower today out of fear that this plant could outgrow the tent. Light intensity increased from 80 to 90 percent on dimmer. Light still 17 inches above canopy. Let the stretch begin.

Fed Nutrients using GH Micro at 5ml/g and Bloom st 10ml/g, plus Cal Mag, Silica, EM1 & Seaweed Extract.

I see a lot of posts about defoliation….something the experienced and successful growers seem to do much much more frequently than I do. I truly failed in my last SCROG to defoliate enough, so that hopefully won’t happen again.

I’m defoliating the LA Peyote Kush every few days so as to not overwhelm her with too many leaves at one time. Here she was today before and after her defoliation. I see more bud sites, so I think this worked out well. Someone on this site recommended looking “down” at the plant while doing it, and that really helped.

These plants have stayed short and have plenty of room to spread, so I plan to veg out another 2-3 weeks. Let’s see how they grow from here.

Big day in the garden! After a mediocre grow in my first 2x4 tent, I believe I’ve discovered (with OldFogey’s tremendous explanation) that my tent was underpowered for flowering. My last grow was nothing special…buds weren’t as tight or as large as I grew in my old tent. I’m pleased to have reached harvest, but I’d like to do better. Just because a light is portrayed as perfect for a 2x4 footprint, it doesn’t mean it’s “perfect”. Lesson learned.

ACD78BA9-395F-4B9C-94DE-60C43ECA534A.jpeg

I have an old-technology (like me) 320-watt Timber three-COB fixture with a 3500 spectrum that didn’t seem to drive much activity in flower. I assumed 40 watts per square foot was a fair measurement. I never looked at ppfd. I’ve now added a second one, so here is my Frankensteined Timber Redwood (RIP) with reduced spacing between COBs. I measured lux under the dimmed settings using my lux meter (a best guesstimate) at 63,000. I’m still in veg mode. The real test will be flower mode. This map shows 18” height, but I believe I read that Timber COBs can be run at 12” above the canopy. I plan to add some spacers as time permits between the lamp frames.

In my opinion, this is called “overkill” at 80 watts per square foot, but they’re dimmed right now so it’s not truly that high. I’ll increase to 80,000 lux over time as we near flower…next 2-3 weeks. Let the experiment begin…..
