I've read about amending your soil with wood ash. I grill exclusively with hardwood lump charcoal and whatever kind of hard wood I'm using for the cook. Is that suitable ash to use? What's a good ratio, if it is?
I was under the impression very little was needed.
I use to spread it in the Veg garden

Oak is OK, but maples are better. If you've got any black walnut trees, don't bother. Blow 'em out in the woods.

We have a black walnut tree. I was tilling the garden one spring and churned up a couple of them that the squirrels had hidden in the dirt. As my wife watched, I got the nutcracker and pick out and proceeded to open them.

She said "You're not eating those, are you?"

Ayup. Wasn't nothin' wrong with 'em, and I love me a black walnut!

Looked like this but the size of a hardball

It would depend on the ph of the wood ash, which differs. It for sure would be basic so would do the same remediation as adding potash.

Black Walnut was all we had around where I grew up and I consider them choice. Black Walnut ice cream is one of my favorites.

The Horse Chesnuts around here have seed balls like that, but the Chesnuts are to high in tannic acid to be palatable roasted.

My next door neighbor burns wood in his fireplace. In the spring, he puts the ashes in a couple of buckets and dumps 'em in the ditch across from his house. I go out and shovel 'em up into the loader bucket and bring 'em home. I just do a top dressing in the pot pen. I couldn't even guess the ratio.
