First time I wired one was over 30 years ago for a Chinese restaurant .
I just worked on a bathroom where the home owner had five zones put in . One condenser (BIG ONE ) fed three air handlers inside and a second condenser feeding 2 air handlers on the other side of the house. 5 zones 2 condensors installed with electric 18.5 K
also I think 2 zones may have aux heat in them ....
What I have heard is with these air units inside must be kept clean and could be tough with dust ,dander ,belly button lint....

Im putting a split air unit in my Big Pantry that im also going to have my grow room in.
I think a split system is controlled more accurately than a portable . A thing of beauty.
The electric load on two ac condensers ( 5 zones ) on the bath job I was on was less than 2 cond & 2 zones of ducted ac and not as efficient.

The cheapest way to go is to put a split system in your living room, or get one of those mobile AC units and put it by a window.
Back at my old house in suburbia, I had a decent sized unit in the kitchen window and another in the bedroom. Leave the curtains closed and the bathroom door shut and it would stay cold enough to give ya goose pimples even on the hottest days.
If you looked up my addy on a sat map, all you could see is the first six feet of my driveway. The maple trees blocked out the entire house and yard.

Lots of ppl use to use them. Just keep them clean and they work fine. Ugly as hell but they work.

I like the Split Air units. Doesnt pick up heat from air ducts in the attic.
Speaking of air ducting
Has any new improvements been made to it to keep the air inside cool while the AC is off in between cooling cycles?
My air blows friggin hot the 1st few mins while the ducts clear and cool of the hot air.
Mine are 35 yrs old Ducting of flex insulted 6 inch. now.

I have used mini splits for decades now, and they work fine, but the unit inside of the flower room gets filthy with the resin that is airborne and gums up the coils. It doesn’t take long to cut the efficiency of one of those units in half with the amount of dirt that’s in a grow room. They now make a gimmick that you can use to wash the coils off the unit while it is still on the wall and keep the room dry…kinda like giving the inside unit an enema while on the wall…definitely a 3 person job
