Nuts are tasty. I had a friend that had a black walnut tree. When roasted it’s so good.
I have a black walnut tree. They are way too hard for me to get out of the shell but the tree is loaded down this year. My Grandma was able to get them out of the shell but I remember her hands were stained black for several days afterward. They did taste good in her cake and in homemade ice cream tho

Turtles have been making their way in my backyard lately. Maryjane quickly lets me know about it when she finds them. I usually go pick it up and put it on the other side of the back fence gate near the lake tributary in the woods so they will be safe. They are usually pretty yellow box turtles but lately a big flat water looking turtle I was afraid that it might be a snapping turtle but didn’t know how to tell. He was moving really fast for a turtle. I knocked on his shell and picked him up with no snapping thank god. He was about a foot long and 10” in diameter. Should I have tested with a stick to see if he would bite first? How do I know if it’s a snapping turtle and if it is, will it bite me for moving it out of the yard? I tried to hold it from as far back as I could in case he reached his long neck out to bite me…
haha I’m stoned. Please help me 🤪
@SubmarineGirl (*snork*) Sounds like you found a male soft-shell turkle. They CAN bite. But these pointy-nose beasties are nothing like snapping turtles, since they are often kept as pets.

When I go over to my neighbor's pond, a big (over 2') softshell comes out of the water and over to me. I hand feed her bread. Her feet are bigger than my hands! (Females are bigger than the males.)

A snapping turtle looks like something slapped together by Satan. Flat out evil looking, with a temperament to match. Even a small one is dangerous. Lookit this little one -- check out the size of his razor jaws for such a dinky little specimen:

These get to be 100 pounds or more. I useta catch them by hand (still have both) back in the Olden Days. Here's an idea of size. TINS

Now from yer Unca:

*IF* you see a snapping turtle (and you WILL know it!) you must keep in mind this thing can actually JUMP at you as it stretches out its long neck. It thrusts itself a full body-length forward instantly with its front legs. Dangerous monster.

So the Turkle Rule For Subbie is: If it is a snapper, shoot it or run the hell away. Your call.

I am a black walnut freak!!! Cannot get them in Floriduh. We had a way to get the husks off that was painless. (This was back in the late Forties/early Fifties before rubber gloves were invented...)

You could pass this on --

We's toss them in the gravel driveway, and also where the mailman turned in. The tires would wear the husks off and not damage the shell. Then we'd gather them up and open them.

That was easy to do with light hammer taps to get the giant "turkeys" out. I wish I had some. It's been more than a quarter-century... (*sigh*) <-- Jeez. That wuz written when I was as high as a condor's hiney.

Wow that is rad and healthy. I remember the outer shell as being size of a tennis ball. We would pick the black size ball shell that have fallen on the ground. Impossible to crack open. My friend would use this metal sharp looking dowel
And hammer it in until eventually who would hear a crack. Your Grandma had the gift and expertise. That’s so Awesome.
How old is your tree SubMarineGirl.
Nice pic! 😊

That’s Awesome Uncle Walt. Interesting and classic way laying them out on the gravel driveway as the gravel is used with pressure from the tires. Awesome😊

I’m not sure my guess at least 20 years old it’s about 40ft tall. The man that built this house in the 60s was a master gardener and left me with with beautiful trees and flowers that bloom all year. This is just one of them

I usually collect them in a bucket when I’m doing the daily poo-p scoop thing so the lawnmower don’t find them as they can hurt someone. They are too much trouble for me and the fruit goes to waste as nobody around here wants them either. I guess the squirrels get some of them. I also have a mulberry bush that makes tons of fruit but just let the birds eat them.

I do remember you mentioning about Eucalyptus trees that you raise. Do you still do raise them? In front of my make shift apartment or let’s just say studio I have these lemon Eucalyptus trees. I read that these are poisonous and used for extermination of critters. Ironically seeds fall from the tree and after finding out what this little plant is it’s definitely coming from the trees. So I planted one of them and here are the pics. When you just even touch the leaf it’s smells like sweet lemons.

SubMarineGirl. What Awesome Botanical plants and trees you share.

Here is the huge lemon Eucalyptus tree and my Polka dot plants which I love the most. And look at one of the sprouts from the eucalyptus tree coming out from the cement. How silly is that.

Wow that a really big tree and nice flowerbed too love the polka dots too
What’s unique is I bought 2 polka dot plants that were like tiny from the 99 cent store where I live. This was in 2018. I bought a pink and a red one. They grow these little tiny purple flowers that don’t live long. However I learned that when you don’t cut them they grow real viney stemmy. Then about a couple years later I started seeing little babies. Tiny sprouts. I researched it and found out they produce a lot of seeds. So naturally from the 2 pics bushy pink and bushy red polka plants gave off seeds naturally and now my little garden is filling up.

Woke up early with fking heartburn. So I'm laying here in bed propped up and on my phone. Easy to prop up because I have an adjustable bed. Even vibrates. Hardly ever use it because it freaks my dog out that sleeps on the floor by the bed. And no you can't spoon with me Hippie 😁

Wishing all a lovely Sunday!

Another gorgeous day here, starting at 56F and predicted to reach 84F.

The vacuum cleaner switch arrived so I put it back together and it works again.

I loaded up the Jeep with junk to get rid of and dropped by a Neighborhood collection program, only to discover that I misread their scope and had to bring it all back home. I've now gone through it again and cut the scrap lumber to size for the garbage and cleaned the dust off the rest of the treasures for Goodwill.

There was some confusion between Grayfox and our landscaper as to schedule and he didn't show up yesterday, so she is attempting to reschedule.
