I have a black walnut tree. They are way too hard for me to get out of the shell but the tree is loaded down this year. My Grandma was able to get them out of the shell but I remember her hands were stained black for several days afterward. They did taste good in her cake and in homemade ice cream tho
@SubmarineGirl (*snork*) Sounds like you found a male soft-shell turkle. They CAN bite. But these pointy-nose beasties are nothing like snapping turtles, since they are often kept as pets.Turtles have been making their way in my backyard lately. Maryjane quickly lets me know about it when she finds them. I usually go pick it up and put it on the other side of the back fence gate near the lake tributary in the woods so they will be safe. They are usually pretty yellow box turtles but lately a big flat water looking turtle I was afraid that it might be a snapping turtle but didn’t know how to tell. He was moving really fast for a turtle. I knocked on his shell and picked him up with no snapping thank god. He was about a foot long and 10” in diameter. Should I have tested with a stick to see if he would bite first? How do I know if it’s a snapping turtle and if it is, will it bite me for moving it out of the yard? I tried to hold it from as far back as I could in case he reached his long neck out to bite me…

I am a black walnut freak!!! Cannot get them in Floriduh. We had a way to get the husks off that was painless. (This was back in the late Forties/early Fifties before rubber gloves were invented...)
Wow that is rad and healthy. I remember the outer shell as being size of a tennis ball. We would pick the black size ball shell that have fallen on the ground. Impossible to crack open. My friend would use this metal sharp looking dowel

I’m not sure my guess at least 20 years old it’s about 40ft tall. The man that built this house in the 60s was a master gardener and left me with with beautiful trees and flowers that bloom all year. And hammer it in until eventually who would hear a crack. Your Grandma had the gift and expertise. That’s so Awesome.

I usually collect them in a bucket when I’m doing the daily poo-p scoop thing so the lawnmower don’t find them as they can hurt someone. They are too much trouble for me and the fruit goes to waste as nobody around here wants them either. I guess the squirrels get some of them. I also have a mulberry bush that makes tons of fruit but just let the birds eat them.
I do remember you mentioning about Eucalyptus trees that you raise. Do you still do raise them? In front of my make shift apartment or let’s just say studio I have these lemon Eucalyptus trees. I read that these are poisonous and used for extermination of critters. Ironically seeds fall from the tree and after finding out what this little plant is it’s definitely coming from the trees. So I planted one of them and here are the pics. When you just even touch the leaf it’s smells like sweet lemons.

Here is the huge lemon Eucalyptus tree and my Polka dot plants which I love the most. And look at one of the sprouts from the eucalyptus tree coming out from the cement. How silly is that.
What’s unique is I bought 2 polka dot plants that were like tiny from the 99 cent store where I live. This was in 2018. I bought a pink and a red one. They grow these little tiny purple flowers that don’t live long. However I learned that when you don’t cut them they grow real viney stemmy. Then about a couple years later I started seeing little babies. Tiny sprouts. I researched it and found out they produce a lot of seeds. So naturally from the 2 pics bushy pink and bushy red polka plants gave off seeds naturally and now my little garden is filling up.
