I've got a grow set up in my 12' X 12' fully insulated outdoor wooden shed. I have a 1000w HPS with an air cooled hood. It gets kinda cold at night so I'm going to run a small space heater. I've got the hood open at one end at the other I've got a 250 fan sucking air out of the room. The ducting is set up so the air is sucked out of the room, through the hood/light and then outside. So my question is this. Am I wasting my money running the heater (and will it even really raise the temp in the shed) if the fan is just going to suck all the heat out? My other option is, instead of leaving the one end open on the hood, Run it outside so it doesn't disturb the ambient temperature much and it just basically cools the light. If I did this would I then have to run another separate fan pumping fresh air from outside due to the fact that the fan is not sucking air from the room anymore and i've now created a sealed environment. This is getting COMPLICATED, maybe I'm over thinking it and should just run a heater with a thermostat, but I don't want it to run all the time. My electric bill is high enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks:D

mmmm... have you considered taking the exhaust fan off the cool tube? (if that's possible) let the light heat the room and use oscillating fans to move the air around? then keep the exhaust running seperate from the hood. I would hate to run a room heater on top of everything else.

Xeblaro is on the right track. I would also put a fan speed controller on the fan so you can slow it down. That would also help you to regulate the temps.

What i do in winter is just adjust the fan speed i leave it attached to my cooltube but my temps dont get as cold.

All good advice above but its not going to help when you flower.
Your going to need a heater and a good temp controler, the thermostats on the heaters are crap for maintaing a steady temp, and you wont be able to go back inside to adjust it once lights out.

If you get a good controler you could set it to turn off the fan when the heats on or use a Y with motorized dampers to either suck straight thru or exhaust the shed.

Do you have a room within the 12 x12 shed for your grow? If not I would construct something. First of all, your 1000W light is only good for about 30 sq ft. If you construct a room within your shed the correct size for your light, I believe that you will have a lot easier time controlling your temps.

I would not suggest turning off your exhaust fan. Your plants need a continual supply of fresh air all the time the lights are on for proper photosynthesis.

You know I agree HG, but what I found on my own setup is that is will cycle quite often and supplys good exchange while lights are out and maintains exact temp and humidity control.

My fan is always on when lights are on.
