is it good to trim the roots of mothers if its all root bound?

I'm thinking I read a stickie on this 2 years ago...

I've never tried trimming the roots, if my mom plants start getting to big, I take clones from them and throw them into flower, and the clone becomes the new mom.

I know that Zip Flip has done the root trimming though.

I trim the roots on my mom's. They are in 2 gal pots and I just take them out every couple months and remove all the wrap around, knock off as much soil as I can leaving about 2/3 of the roots, and replant in fresh soil mix. They usually show very little stress(strain dependent, I'm sure) and then there is a growth explosion for a couple more months. My success rate on clones increased dramatically when I started doing this a few weeks before cutting them. A healthy mom is your best weapon against the clone.
