Never had plantains that I know of, but I have ate my share of other things like pok-salad probably didn't spell it right and you don't have to spell it to eat it. Lots of different wild greens and onions, am planning on some dandelion greens next spring. May have to find some plantains and give it a try.

Hey @boo -- Some trivia I picked up in Jamaica about 55 years ago:

Aki <-- which is delicious in a salad, or baked, or fried with cod is deadly poisonous. TINS.

It is banned from import by the FDA. Even canned <-- Except there are some canned Aki brands on the market that have gotten the "green stamp" from the FDA as safe. The reason even canned Aki is not necessarily safe is that the canning process does not remove the poison -- you just can the poison.

"...there’s this thing called Jamaican vomiting sickness (JVS), and it’s pretty self explanatory. The illness starts within 2-12 hours of consuming unripe ackee, or its pods or seeds.

Symptoms include vomitting, loss of consciousness, and seizures. Without immediate supportive care, death can result.
In a three month period of 2001 in Haiti there were 60 cases of poisoning due to ackee, resulting in 36 deaths. So the threat is very real."

I found out about it when I saw a Jamaican lady smack a little kid hard, about five times -- for picking up a partially-opened aki fruit laying under a tree. If the kid had put it in his mouth...

I think it's 'poke salad' - an elderly lady down the road was walking by one day and asked if she could grab some of the "weeds" that were at the back of my yard, at the edge of my now-long-gone woods. I told her surely.

Couple hours later, she came back with a big, steaming hot bowl of what looked like spinach, topped with egg pieces, bacon, and a splash of vinegar. It was delicious! She pointed out the "poke" plants to me.

I have a large patch of it in my back yard
I always thought it was poisonous, but now I see the younger plants can be eaten at the right time of the year. I would not chance it unless I knew more about it myself.
