hi

i bought 5 WW and 5 skunk #1 ( both feminized and both of them is seedsman ) from attitude and i put them a glass of water to crack.

however, some of seeds directly sinked as soon as when i put into water while others floating .after 5-6 hours, all seeds sinked.
deoes it mean directly sinked seeds are dead ?

Mr Weedmore, sinking seeds does not indicate death of seeds. Some sink, some float. Do not think they will crack in the water. Putting them in water for 8-12 hours makes the seed shell softer to crack when you put them in dirt or a wet paper towel. I myself do the method of an 8 hour soak, then place them in a wet peat pellet and I usually put a heating pad under (on low) the tray the peat pellets on in.
Please NOTE......You do not want them to "crack" under water, possibley "crack" them in a wet paper towel, but not underwater in a glass.

i didnt know that ,i was in panic. i am relax now

i put them into rockwool cubes ,temp is 25C and humidity 60 % .
i also put 2 X 36W CFL:rolleyes:

I put mine in a glass of warm water, most float, some sink instantly.

After a while (couple of hours) I poke them with my finger to poke them under the water, I keep doing this until all the seeds sink (sometimes upto 24 hours)

Seeds that do not sink are dead, they are hollow inside and will not germinate, throw those away.

I leave the sunken seeds in the water in a dark place and it can take 24 hrs, 48hrs or up to a week for the seeds to germinate, but ALL the sunken seeds germinate.

I personally find it a better way to germinate than the wet paper towel method.

The above works well with fresh seeds, with old seeds I do it a different way.

Old seeds can have a very hard shell, I soak them like I do the new seeds and the ones that open are planted in soil or whatever your using.

The sunken seeds that are not opening I pick out and rub them against a fine file, eg a woman fingernail file or fine sandpaper, I do this along the line where the seed cracks open and then re soak them until they open.

All I am doing is making the seed shell thinner along the line where the tap root comes out (old seed shells can get so hard that the tap root cannot push the shell open)

:peace:

i also saw this being done on a you tube video link with a small sheet of sand paper rolled up and then gently shaking for 2 minutes. All I am doing is making the seed shell thinner along the line .

Well I learned something new, never thot that you would want the seeds to crack underwater. The book I read said 12 hours and no more. Thanks HIE, I wont be freaking if I let the seeds go past 12 hours then.
I have also read of the sandpaper method. Says to put part of a nail file in a match box and add seeds, shake and the sandpaper will score the outside rim of seeds so they pop easier.

i put them underwater for 8 hours and all of them was put rockwool now .

thanks

waz wrong with paper towel thier sterile and keep in miosture put in baggie for 48 hours and bingo add h20
