I placed some foam panels in my blender so it would all break up into little balls and i used that in my soil instead of perlite, so i started wondering if there was anything special about PERLITE, and i found this :

Horticultural Applications

In horticultural applications, perlite is used throughout the world as a component of soilless growing mixes where it provides aeration and optimum moisture retention for superior plant growth. For rooting cuttings, 100% perlite is used. Studies have shown that outstanding yields are achieved with perlite hydroponic systems. Other benefits of horticultural perlite are its neutral pH and the fact that it is sterile and weed-free. In addition, its light weight makes it ideal for use in container growing. Other horticultural applications for perlite are as a carrier for fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides and for pelletizing seed. Horticultural perlite is as useful to the home gardener as it is to the commercial grower. It is used with equal success in greenhouse growing, landscaping applications and in the home in house plants.

I think i underestimated the value of perlite!!!:hitchair: :) .. ill make sure i pick some up on my next trip to HD....

Glad that you shared the importance of Perlite.Nice find:D Keep it GREEN:hubba:

It's not necessarily the perlite that is so important as is just that soil needs SOMETHING to break it up and aerate it and help with oxygen exchange.
Coco Coir... vermiculite, lava stones, silica stones, rocks, will give you good aeration.

In hydro, there are many mediums to grow with that is fine without perlite. Perlite is not ESSENTIAL to mj growing but most growers find it useful because of it being readily available and cheap.

Good post man.. perlite is off the hook ..;)

I forgot to ask, if anyone had clones under 100% perlite before?

i have seen clones grown in perlite and clones grown in 90%perlite 10%peat with great success.. plants do better with perlite cause it breaks up soil and lets air to the roots. if the soil is like a rock than your plant will not get air, what would you do if we put a bag on your head;)

I've been preaching the joys of perlite for a while now! I grow almost exclusively in perlite now and have some of the healthiest plants I have ever grown. I think it's the ideal medium for a busy (and lazy) growers like me. Just feed them every day and my girls grow like, well, weeds. You can even let them go for a couple of days and they are fine.

Haven't tried cloning in perlite yet. Might give it a try this weekend.

I use 100% perlite for clones... plus if u put them outdoors... some perlite not held by roots falls into ur hole to aerate the soil better =)
