To answer you as briefly as possible, the folks who own vBulletin keep altering their code that runs the hundreds of "tiny applications" within it. They don't really care what third party software problems it causes. The "Thanks" button is a 3rd party software which is available to add to your copy of vBulletin if you like. Almost all 3rd party apps include disclaimers that release them of any fault when your site crashes.
