At this time I am considering making a small grow op in my apartment for personal use and for friends. The room I have is 5' x 8'. It has 8'6" ceilings (and above the ceiling is a 3 foot attic that doesn't lead anywhere. Next to this room is the kitchen, and so I'm wondering if I could vent out throught the kitchen exhaust system? Maybe vent in from there too? I imagine that the venting goes all the way up the building (20 floors), I am on the first level. Is there a chance odours could leak out through this? Can I put something in the exhaust that eliminates odours? Other main concern is venting in. I was thinking of running a tube from the patio (10' away throught the living space) with a fan on the end while I'm at home. While I'm not home, or when I have guests, I would want to tuck th tube away. Will this work? Ideally I would like to skip the whole venting this way, and just simply create a hidden door behind a bookcase into this room. How many plants do you think I will be able to fit in here? I was thinking 18? Is that going to produce a lot of weed? Any further help in designing an efficient room would be helpful. Thanks!!!

5 x 8, I would do one 600hps or 1-1000 hps with about 6 plants, here's what I did before, take out the attic acess door (you know , in the deiling, and put up a new door with the venting attached to it, and vent into the attic. By replacing the attic door, you'll not mess u8p the ampartment. You totally got to have odor control by means of a fan and filter can, or put an ozone generator in your attic. I would do everything I could afford to. In the hot summer months and any time in flowwering, without odor control, you can smell it next door in an ampartment, and we don't want to get noticed, so no chances, you need ventialtion, and you also need odor control. I use a can fan as a scrubber and leave it on all day

Thanks Freedom! So were clear, the attic doesnt go anywhere (it's just dead air space, so any air I push up there will stay there. What do you recommend for bringing air in?

I've been watching videos on the net, and I was thinking that I was going to be able to do 12 plants. Is that not realsitic? I was planning on 2 lamps at 600 each. Is that going to throw my hydro way outa wack, or will I just slip through the cracks?

umm, deluxe grow box is ideal... you want do it in your bedroom, hmm you got a/c so vent is not needed... also u got guest, so no vent less suspicious.. u can get outdoor lawn closet, and from there you can master a grow room op I plan to do that plus have aeroponic inside of it. IMO!!

5v8=40 sq ft. would require "at least" 2 1000 watters for sufficient coverage.
"I" recommend splitting it into 2 sections, 1 for veg and 1 for flowering.
4X5 is just about perfect for flowering with a 1K hps...;)

Newer buildings are required to have fire blocking between individual units that is airtight. But older buildings will most likely have air gaps where plumbing, electrical wires and ducting penetrates the floor, walls or ceiling. I don't really believe that you would be safe at all venting into your attic.

Also, an apartment is a rather scary place to grow--you can never be assured privacy. Management and maintenance people have the right to enter your apartment in case of an emergency or for regular maintenance.

I would agree with Freedom that you need lots of odor control. One of the things I would think about is how much pot do you need. with plants that big you are looking at possible lbs per plant. and if you are going to do a rotation cycle for continual grow you might want to look at fewer plants with a smaller area that way all of your concerns are minimized along with lesser LEO issues. don't know where you live but I know on this tropical island that has similar laws to California I can have 6 mature flowering plants and up to 12 immature plants. and i expect to still get over the legal 8 oz dry that I can have. Hopefully i will be able to keep that on a rotating 2 month cycle. But if they came to visit and I had 24 6' plants with prob 2 lbs of dry off of each they would assume I was a dealer and lock my *** up for a long time. I am not telling you to do anything I just would hate to see someone get big time busted cuz they underestimated what a setup would yield. + it would save alot of money if you didnt need it all. Just my Opinion :D

Thanks for all your help guys! I'm from BC, but I'm not sure how many plants I could get with if I got caught. Perhaps I should start with less. The condo I have is new, and I own it, so there is little risk. I'm going to put a hidden door to the room, so that the annual fire inspections go smoothly. From all the info I'm getting, would it be fair to say that a grow box (6' x 3') would be the best way to go? Will that accomodate 8 plants or so? How much can I realistically expect to harvest from this type of grow?

I am getting my first grow room together also, but I have read alot of the threads on here and your first few grows will be light while you learn your system and plants. but if you dont mind some library time (old threads) and a bit of elbow grease (learning lst and topping techniques) then you will prob bring in anywhere from 1oz dry to 4 or 5 depending on genetics and your green thumb :D. take some pics and start a grow room build journal to get advice as you build so that you dont have to rebuild something again cuz you didnt see something or know about a cool trick, but again thats just my opinion :D:D

It is to your benefit to know the laws that govern marijuana cultivation in your area. A difference of one plant can sometimes mean the difference between a mandatory jail sentence and probation.

You won't fool the fire dept with a hidden door--that is just asking for trouble. I think that a grow box is a far better idea--you can at least make it look like something else.

I have a 1000W HPS is a space 3 x 6.5. I never put more than 8 plants in my space and I think it does best with 4-6 plants. I have a perpetual grow--I move a new plant into the flowering closet every 2 weeks or so thereby harvesting a plant every 2 weeks or so. I grow different strains that can be quite different in size and yield . A kind of rule of thumb is that if your conditions are good, you can hope to get about .5 grams per watt of light. This can vary widely depending on strain, how optimum your conditions are, and whether you use advanced training techniques.

just built my room . in a bedroom similar to yours. made 2 rooms plus closet for seedlings and clones. Now , im thinking of changing it into 2 mini"stadiums". CHECK OUT ""NORTHERN FARMERS HP STADIUM GROW"" IN THIS THREAD SECTION. You might find it interesting.
