my first outdoor grow... sort of

so i havent done any growing since my mom died and my family moved off the mountain. and i hadn't done any outdoor stuff for a year or 3 before that, so we'll just say its been about 5 years since ive had any plants of my own to baby. it used to be a mother/daughter bonding thing and im just now feeling the need to start again. luckily for me, even though i dont live on a mountain anymore, im still in an area with a VERY small population (approx:300ppl) to a fairly large area (about 10sq. miles) so ive decided to do an outdoor grow. i know the area extremely well and im not to worried about people seeing me wandering all over the place since i've been doing that for a couple of years now. im the weird girl that walks all over the place, tromping through the fields and woods. usually barefoot and covered in flowers and mud.

but even with the large unchecked areas and the lack of intrest in my commings and goings im not about to let myself get sloppy. and since im not interested in selling that will be even less of a chance with problems of the legal variety. really im only looking to grow enough to keep me and a friend or 2 in like sin. i have several sights picked out and i figure that no more than 6 plants per site should be good. ive decided to keep it small and as unobtrusive and spread out as possible. and all of my sites have been picked for keeping the local high school kids out of my plants.

and now some pictures for your amusement. i planted roughly 40 seeds about 4 days ago and so far they look healthy. i'll be moving them to small pots* in about 2 weeks where they'll stay untill they're big enough and the weather steady enough to transplant outside. all of these have been taken over the last day or so.

*side note: whats the best potting mix to use? ive read some different opinions on here and it seems pretty conflicting sometimes... also should i stay away from miracle-grow or not? ive heard some people say to avoid it and others that its not a problem... if someone could clarify and maybe give me a few reasons why i shouldnt use something that would be great... also, im on a pretty tight budget...

I just try and find agood soil that is not to dence meaning it has a lot of foreign matter in it and it drains good but holds moisture also. As for the mircle grow I used it for years and if its all you have as long as you use it sparingly you can get by but its better for flowers and not all that great for MJ. I found that the fox farm grow big and tiger bloom work so much better. They are less than 20$ a bottle and for what your planning on growing it will last more than one year. Others may can point you tward something cheaper and also as good thats just my choices. One thing you didn`t talk about was what kinda seeds you are using. If you do everything for the best and use crappy seeds you still wan`t have a good outcome. Hope this helped.

the seeds im using are a mix really. over the last 6 month or so, anytime ive gotten anything worth remembering, i'd get all the seeds i could from it. of course there usually weren't to many seeds so i've been saving up all winter. like i said, just sort of a mixed bag *lol*. since i do live in a ridiculously small area, getting seeds from amazing, well-know strains is pretty difficult. but i do the best i can. and if you work it right, even strains that are dirt can produce some good bud. its that whole nature vs nurture.

*also, i probably dont know as much about fert, nutes and such because mom and i aways went the organic route. as in using harvest from the veg garden to make the pesticides and fungicides. also, mom was a huge fan of compost. i'll be going that way when i can but for right now it wont be a very stable option for me. *sigh*

Even on a "tight budget", IMHO, you can do better than MG soil. In most areas, even the big chain grocery stores carry a line of reasonably priced composted manures, sheep, steer, mushroom, ect. A bale of peat, few bags of compost, perlite and/or vermiculite(15-20%) AND DOLOMITE LIME (1 tblsp/per gallon of soil mix). Dig and amend your holes ASAP to allow the organic goodies an oppurtunity to start working. Dig 'em deep and wide , mix it well .
Fert'/nutrients may be more difficult to find in a sparsly populated area. I recommend Fox Farms trio pack, but in th event that it is impossible to aquire, try to find and make teas from worm castings, alfalfa, guanos, ect.

thanks! another good thing about the area i live in is that its made up of primarily of cow pastures. lots and lots of cows. and sheep. and goats. so all that should be super easy to come buy depending on whether or not im in the mood to go get it myself or have one of the neighbors kids to do it for me. and i live about 1/2 mile down from a feed/farm suply store and the owner has never had a problem special ordering something for people. i'll be spendig all these next few weeks getting things sorted out, including soil testing. wish me luck! *happy dance!*

the cow manure you will get straight from the fields is hot and could burn your plants. At the store they have manure that has been composted so as to not burn your plants. So be careful...
