ok i am fixing to make a compost pile and have few questions(probly been asked 1000 times if so sry)

i am planning on using leaves and grass clipping and hedge clippings to start with will this be fine to start with and if so are there any other things i should add to the pile to make the compost better? also i was thinking of adding some dirt to the pile is this ok or no. Another thing is i have horse on my propery would it be fine to take there droppings and add it to if so how long for the droppings are decompsed enough to use.
Sry if i sound like retard asking these questions but i take all your guys advice and tips to heart learned tons here on MP forums. also off topic question i planted my first mj plants and there 31 days old and standing about 18 inches high an don there 7 set of nodes is this decent for a plants of this age? :holysheep:

I don't know about hedge clippings, shrub clippings? Horse manure is good for soil but you do need to break up the clumps pretty good. It is loaded with beneficial organism's. I know you can use grass clippings and leaves and soil. I would try to find a good rich soil to start with. If you can than you are already ahead of the game. You can use the horse droppings right away, just break them up into smaller pieces. Some people lay down plastic and grab rubber gloves to do it.

I suggest breaking the clumps up so that they will decompose a little faster for you.
The nice thing about horse manure is it will last longer than cow manure, it breaks down slower.
Sheep manure is great as well. Top dress your outside plants with some sheep manure and they will love it.

you can also add any veggy waste, banana peels, rinds, egg shells, skins, ect...

I have never put manure in my compost, I worry about weeds.

cover your compost with something if you can, black plastic maybe.

I have a bin with a lid.

be sure to turn your compost waste pile over and mix stuff up once in a while.

good luck! you will love the dirt you get from it.

I also add worms to my pile.

thanks alot bro will do question bout the cover i dont have a bin but i might be able to put a tarp across the top, now should i just put it on top of the pile or or place it a few inches above the pile? alsoo does anyone know if humidity effects the decomp rate at all cause i live in the worse place in america for it lol humidty this mornign was at 90% at 8 am sun wsnt even out good yet lol but thanks again for the info

Do *NOT* put citrus peels into the compost. Almost anything else will work. Citrus REALLY plays with the pH of compost as it decomposes.

humidity shouldnt be to much trouble just keep it turned,

put your tarp right over the top, heat is what helps it compost. and you dont even really need to cover it.

I live out in the country and I keep mine covered so the ***** stay away.

just keep layering stuff on and turn it over with a shovel every couple of weeks.

my mom had one once where she used old wood skids and built 3 walls, top open, and we just piled the stuff into it. the wall keep it contained and the open end made it easy for turning.

cool thanks for the advice i live in the country also, and i kinda made my pile the same as your moms cept i used field fence on 3 sides and left other end open for same reason she did thansk again for tkaign the time to help me out:)

I layer my compost piles with all the above ingredients, plus I get coffee grounds from a local shop weekly and add those too. I don't cover my piles. If the pile heats up properly, it should kill off most of the weed seeds in the horse manure.
