Have you seen the shockwave he is talking about? 12 gauge pump, no stock but a large knob like handle with under 18 inch barrel. Seems to violate all kinds of regulations, but they saw it as unique, and classified it as "any Other weapon" or something like that, Shazam it legal with no tax stamp needed.
Less than 26 inches overall, barrel under 18 inches, etc.
The barrel is 14". OAL is 26.37" It's not a "shotgun" because it has no shoulderable stock. It's not an AOW, which IS an NFA item. It's a "firearm", per the BATFE.

"With an overall length of 26.37”, the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) has classified the compact 590 Shockwave platform as a “Non-NFA Firearm,” requiring no tax stamp for transfers. It has been classified and is considered a “firearm” under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (“GCA”), but it is not a long gun under GCA, and therefore Federal Law requires the purchaser of a 590 Shockwave to be 21 years of age."

In my state, it's a handgun. Anything under 30" is a handgun. I've got folding stock AKs that are registered as handguns. I bought a KelTec sub 2000 from a dealer as a rifle. I took it to the county and told them I wanted to register it as a handgun and why. She pulled out her tape measure and it was 29 and 7/8ths long. She told me I could add a thin buttplate to bring it out to 30". I told her that I could legally hunt deer in my area with it if it was a handgun. Grin.

Synopsis

The series portrays the adventures of young Confederate army veteran Johnny Yuma, an aspiring writer, played by Nick Adams. Haunted by his memories of the American Civil War, Yuma, in search of inner peace, roams the American West, specifically the Texas Hill Country and South Plains. He keeps a journal of his adventures and fights injustice where he finds it with a revolver and his dead father's sawed-off, double-barreled shotgun.[1]

I was only referring to the "Mare's Leg" firearm. Johnny Yuma didn't use one of those.
