Heat question

Is 1200 watts of hps lighting enough to be thermally detected? at what point does things start to get out of hand? I don't have any exhaust fans yet.

Proper exhaust is just as important in my opinion as proper lighting....as for being detected that wld depend on a lot of other factors. I am guessing you are talking about that heat radar...flickr or whatever it is called.

yes i am aware of the importance of exhaust. i am a poor gardener i'm going to get the tools soon.

i was indeed talking about the heat radar that they use in the helicopters.

wow I didnt think they still did that...and I know 1200 watts aint gonna flag ya...how are your plants doing without exhaust?...what are your temps?..take care and be safe

If your keeping you grow area in the normal growing temp range(70* to 80*) there will not be much of a heat sig to been seen. The better you have your house insulated the less that can be seen also.

thanks alot! 1200 watts doesn't seem like a lot but i just wanted to make sure.

my last grow was with only one 600w hps and during the summer it got as high as 102 degrees during the day. i kept a fan blowing to help. When it got cold outside the room was a good 73 degrees. From 2 plants (northern lights and jock horror fems), i got over 6 oz's of dried and cured bud. i had taco shell leaves for a while but never leaf burn. i think with proper ventilation the grow would've been much better. the biggest problem i had was odor control.

Just think man, all kinds of people use things like space heaters n whatnot that are high temp high wattage, high infrared output. When the cops use imagine to bust grows, they look for those heat signatures all over the house, not just one or two here and there. I used to use high intensity lighting setups for my photography. There are tons of things out there that have a similar thermal sig. as HID for plants, so dont worry, unless you have a farm goin, you are ok.

I don't know but i think that you guys are not quite right ... From what i heard they can check with termal imaging as little as 600watts. They are closing lot's of UK small grows and big grows ( 7000 per year ) based mostly on thermal images. Get better informed because if they are with those mtf on the area that you live you need to be extra carefull.

BHO, I am guessing you are referring to the program "Cannabis: What's the Harm?" showed in the UK last week. You quoted figures from that show which is why I mentioned it.
Have you ever heard of the word propoganda?
The 7000 a year was NOT from thermal imaging only, it was from all sources and the thermal image picture they showed could have been a living room fire since th hot spot was at ground level. What they did point out was that the raid was as a result of the image they had "PLUS INTELEGENCE".
My guess was that they took the picture AFTER receiving a tip off, it was supportive evidence. Oh, did you notice, there wasnt a grow op there either. It was all meant to make you think they took the pic, which was from ground level, not a helecopter, then went on to bust someone, which they didn't. It was total brainwashing propaganda (propaganja as I call the lies spouted about weed).

The police work from 95% intelegence (laughable I know but never underestimate your enemy) which is why you tell NO ONE you are growing.

After saying all that, it is better to be safe than sorry and if Trojan has fears, it is better he works to resolve the problem, even if only for the sake of his plants! 1200W of heat is a lot if not countered in some way and yes, I am sure it would throw quite a noticable thermal image. Think about it, they use thermal detection camera's to find people and I dont know many people that would throw a 1200W heat signature!

The most disturbing thermal image is probably the one on your roof when it frosts--or snows if you're unfortunate enough to live where it does that.

That is true ... I liked the show. Very much indeed. And i also think that UK is having some trouble with criminals growing weed. And with weed itself ... Kids with 14 smoking since 10 !!! But i don't live there so ... Who is the guy that presents the show ? UK Celebrity ?

I cannot imagine running 600 watts (let alone 1200) without a decent exhaust fan. If you get your ventilation set up as it should be with a decent centrifuge fan, you should have negative pressure in your room and no odor problem.

For goodness sakes, get a centrifuge exhaust fan--a 6" Vortex keeps my 2 600W cool. Your ventilation is as important as your lighting.

Aparently he was on one of the soap opera's (Eastenders, I never watch it as it's a pile of doggy doo)) and a year after leaving the show, he got papped (photographed by paparazzi) building a joint at a party.

The show has some good unbiased info in it but as ever you have to question almost everything you hear. 7,000 bust last year, the biggest number on record works out at 20 per day, split between 56 police forces, not much really is it?

people without a filter cos of finances probly account for a lot of busts id say, and jealous people but thats cos its gold. Its value is ever rising like said metal and people in certain parts will do some horrible things to get it or stop you from having it cos they cant have it themselves

That show was all edit and its someones job on the line, if it appears to glorify the drug or expose the true extent of police stupidity i assume they pull it to avoid complaints. Ive had lots of first hand experience unfortunately, and the cops ive encountered in my time have made the funniest blunders

If the fuel for a chopper was cheaper id worry a bit more.
