Greetings,

I've been growing outdoors but I'm going to start growing indoors as soon as it gets cooler outside. I've looked in all of the help sections, but I can't seem to get an answer so please don't delete my post.

Two questions:

1. I plan to use 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 perlite. Is this a good idea? Does anybody think I should be doing something else?

2. Since this is soilless and has no nutrients, how soon after germination or planting a clone should I begin giving nutes, and how much nutes should I be using early on?

Many thanks for your help.

I grow in straight Perlite. I pretty much start giving them food as soon as they get their first set of real leaves. As for clones, up to now I have cloned in rockwool (which I assume would be pretty much the same) and only misted them with 1/2 strength. If the rockwool starts to dry out a bit, I just heavily mist the rockwool. I usually have about a 90% success rate with clones. Not the best, but I am not the best gardener! After about 10 days, I start to water my clones normally.

Oh, and here is a pretty good thread talking about perlite:

Perlite sounds good, but I'm not sure I'd use it straight. I was just wondering if my 1/3 1/3 1/3 mixture would work and when I should start adding nutes and how much.

i dont see why it wouldnt work, Perlite will help you since it is a great product... but just like anything else you try new, always use 1/4 dosage of anything and build your way up to regullar feeding..

Perhaps I'll go 1/2 perlite and 1/2 peat and skip the vermiculite?

1/3 each of soil, vermiculite, perlite... is a really good combination... i've pretty much cutout my soil now... as i like it to dry out quickly so I cannot overwater. I'm just stuck to my hydro heritage.

If your going soil-less. Old OG FAQ found here would not be a bad idea. There are many soil-less mix recipes.
I found that perlite is great for areation, but does not hold water very well. I've set-up wick systems for giggles using 50% peat, 25% verm. and 25% perlite and worked ok. wouldn't grow herb with the set-up tho.
