Hey All, I've been growing for a few years now. Started small (2 x 4) closet, and have grown into a 5 x 6 closet for flowering and a 2 x 4 tent for veg. I have five 400 watt HPS in the flower area in a u shape.
X A O

O _ X
So lets see if I can explain this. The X's and O's are cool tubes. the A is a 22" hood. So basically each 400 is covering a 2 x 2.5 area. I put 4 plants in 10" pots under each light for a total of 20 plants.
I have it set up so that the hood (A) is on for all the twelve hours. The cool tubes are on digi timers so that the X's are on for 2 hours then they turn off. 2 minutes before the X's turn off the O's turn on for 2 hours. these switch back and forth for the 12 hours of light time.
My question is, do you think the harvest will be affected using this light schedule?
I'm hoping to get the same yield using less juice and therefore creating less heat.
Anyone have experience with this kind of thing? Thanks

so you only ever have 3 of the 5 400's on at any one time? running 3 lights at a time in a 5X6 will give you 5k initial lumens per sq ft, which is the minimum. running all 5 for the full 12 hours will give you 8.3k initial lumens per sq ft. if your room is dialed in, then if it was me i would rather have the extra light as opposed to saving about 50$ a month on lighting costs.

Thanks for the response. I guess I am thinking-hoping- that six hours of direct light and 6 hours of indirect light won't affect yield too much. Kinda like a light mover.
Right now I have just a 4 inch fan cooling the lights. I have an 8 inch fan but can't install it until the weather warms up. I need to cut a bigger hole in the roof. Perhaps then I will just run all the lights at once.
I've also been thinking about using MH in the light that is always on. Anyone tried mixing HPS and MH too see if there is a difference in yield and or quality? Thanks

yes i have run mh and hps in one fixture. i have always liked the results but because i have never ran just hps . cant really say much right now. but i will anyway lol... now that i am running just hps i see that threes alil more sterch add to my ladys. this time around the space between the internodes. when running both hps/mh i was running a 250hps with a 175mh the space was around 3-4 inch between internodes. now i am using just a 400 watt hps and its like 5-6 inch between internodes . i had a much bigger room when a ran the mh/hps combo i think it was 4x4 . now i am more like 2.5x2.5 just a 400 watt hps
