I was talking to a fellow grower about sexxing, he was saying to put plants in 12/12 determine sex, put females back in veg. then take clones and stuff later. Will this not cause hermies? Is this common practice? Wouldnt it be better to root clones and label, then flower clones to determine sex while mothers are still growing.

I'd say keep it simple. Natural cycle is veg, flower and smoke. I don't see why you'd stress the plants if you don't need to. Just my thoughts.

grow them in 24/0. they will show sex only when they are mature

As soon as you have alternating nodes take cuttings. Leave the donor plants on 24/0, put the cuts on 12/12 as soon as they show root. They should show sex within 2 weeks, maybe less. Then you can toss the male donors, continue growing your girls, and you can continue the cuts on 12/12 that are girls and get a bit of bud off them too, or reveg the rooted cuts and use them in your next go around, or as mothers, whatever.

You dont even need to wait till they show roots to put the clones into 12/12, they will sex just fine.

Theres a thing I would like to get rid of here.
I often see people writing that it is possible to "sex" a plant without changing the light cycle.
OGKush hinted at it in his reply "grow them in 24/0. they will show sex only when they are mature" This mentions nothing of changing light cycle so either I am misreading this (and others) post(s).

I know some may think I am being a bit pedantic, I am English, sue me! Seriously though, I see it time and again and no one states, catagorically, that you MUST put the plant in to flower to find its sex (once alternating nodes appear).

pedantic..
overly concerned with minute details or formalisms, especially in teaching
:p

You only need to reduce the hours in order to "induce flowering". Sex can usually be determined without it.

Well, I don't quite understand what you are asking, but you generally don't need to put the plant into flower or change the light cycle to sex. When a plant is sexually mature (has alternating nodes), it will produce preflowers, which are an indication of sex.

i always let mine show sex under 24/0 then take my cuttings so im not wasting time on taking clones from a male just to toss them out. i have a indica i grow regularly that has always shown sex between 5 and 7 weeks from seed.

it really depends on how you like to do it. i know ppl who take cuts and flower the donor plant. others start flowering donor plants and once they see the females they take cuts and veg them.

I remember reading somewhere on here MANY MOONS ago..... One grower could sex his plants before preflower even.... Had to do with node spacing....

If all the nodes were approximately the same distance apart I beleive he said they were male.....

If the nodes were Short then a lil longer then back to short spacing.. I beleive he said they were female....

NOT SURE IF THIS THE WAY IT WAS!!!.. Coulda been the other way around...

I did this in 12 random seed grow once a few years back and it was right.

I would not take it 100%.... but something to look at.

That's just another example of "I've always done it that way" next time, which will be soon, I won't wait for them to root, I'll just put them on 12/12. Anything that speeds up the process works for me. :)

Actually you dont have to put the plant in to flower to find its sex at all.
I recently sexed 12 plants at 6 weeks old in 24-0 light, its a common practice and easy to do if you know what to look for, there are pics in a thread on here somewhere.

Is this the post I was talking about a couple posts up??? or something else?

not sure what you mean.

if your asking if i am the person who posted about the node spacing mentioned in your post a few up, then no it wasnt me.

K man... I can't remember who posted that now...

I "think" I remember it being that goofy guy from vancouver ;)...AND, it didn't prove to hold true at all.

Not sure, Hick... Coulda been....been a while...... I do remember looking at my grow at the time, though..... and it did hold true for me then..... though I admit.. I have not tested it since....

what about that dude Papa something that sexed his seeds and tosses the ones he thought were male or something like that.. im sure some of you guys and gals remember him. he was a strange dude without a doubt

it will show sex in veg, how long it takes depends on the strain. some show sex before alternating nodes show, some show after.
i normaly just buy feminized seeds or clones though. if theres a chance of it being male i just let it veg till it shows me whatsup.
