Hola Guys
I was floating around the net and decided to look into Indian history.
As we all do
Ok I admit it, I was bored
I found this.
Quite interesting when you read it in depth.
CANNABIS IN ANCIENT MEDICAL TEXTS
"Cannabis is one of the widely known psychotropic's the sudden increase in the use of which has become the cause of grave concern of the society.
Use of this plant was well tolerated in the puritan culture of India, and therefore, it is necessary to examine the historical and cultural background of the use of this drug in this country.
In ayurveda, for the maintenance of positive health and prevention as well as cure of psychic, somatic, and psychosomatic diseases, many drugs have been prescribed of which Cannabis is one.
Sex of the Plant : to the physicians and scholars of ancient India, it was known that the plant is unisexual.
The female plant bears fruit and is tender.
The male plant, on the other hand, is a stout tree.
It has been specifically mentioned, that the female plant produces narcotic effects, gives pleasure to the mind and causes fainting when used in excess.
It is also stated that when the female plant is added to any other medicine, it results in a synergistic action i.e. the effect of the medicine is enhanced.
This female plant is described as bitter and pungent in taste and pungent in smell.
Pharmaceutical Processes : Both for healthy individuals and patients it is stated to be used in the following six forms :
1. Curna, or powder
2. Modaka or round bolus form
3. Vatika or tablet
4. Leha and paka or linctus
5. Dugdhapaka, or boiled with milk and
6. Kvatha or decoction.
In addition, it is prescribed and traditionally used in various food forms, viz.
1. sweet drink (sarabat),
2. barfee,
3. laddoo and majan.
Raw Cannabis is also used for chewing and it is also added to the betel leaf and chewed.
Some people also smoke it through the help of a pipe which is known as cilam.
Formulations : For the treatment of patients, this drug is seldom used alone.
Many other drugs are added to it with a view to making it free from its natural narcotic effects, to make it more potent and to make its therapeutic effects broad-based.
In ayurvedic works about 51 important formulations containing Cannabis have been described and they are of the following categories Powders (curna) : 13 Tablets (rasa and vati) : 24 Formulations used in round bollus form (modaka): 11 Linctus (avaleha and paka) : 3 .
In some of these formulations, the part of the Cannabis plant to be used is clearly specified.
In some of them the seed of the plant which does not possess any significant narcotic effect is mentioned to be used.
In these formulations vegetable drugs, drugs of metallic and mineral origin (in bhasma form) and animal products are added.
In some formulations, there is a specific mention to use Cannabis after processing (boiling with milk etc.) even though three are general rules for this purpose.
The nature of the container in which it is to be kept is also described. For different types of patients, this drug is described to be given during different hours of the day and night.
Therapeutic Indications : It is indicated both for healthy individuals and patients.
By the former it is used as an aphrodisiac and also as rejuvenating agent.
It is used in the following ailments of the patients in order of priority : 1. Sprue syndrome (grahani) 2. Male and female sterility (band-hyatva) 3. Impotency (napumsakatva) 4. Diarrhoea (atisara) 5. Indigestion (ajirna) 6. Epilepsy (apasmara) 7. Insanity (unmada) 8.Colic pain (sula).
In addition, this medicine along with others, is indicated in the treatment of 32 other ailments.
Toxicity : Injurious effects produced by this drug when taken in excess were well known to scholars of ancient India.
Its root is described to be a poison in Susruta samhita (700 B.C) and in many medieval ayurvedic works on Materia Medica it is described as an upavisa (poison of minor importance).
To make it free from toxicity and to increase its therapeutics.
Ananda kanda has given a detailed description of the toxic effects that appear in human beings in nine successive stages.
The characteristic features of the body and mind of the individual during these nine stages are described in detail.
Management of Toxic effects : Following therapies and regimens have been suggested for the treatment of its narcotic effects ; 1. Purgation, intake of sour things and head bath with cold water 2. Unction with sandal paste, camphor and cold water. 3. Use of fragrant and cooling flowers and ornaments. 4. Sleeping in cooling bed. 5. Intake of betel leaves along with camphor, cloves etc. 6. Wearing of fine silken and fragrant garments. 7. Intake of drinks prepared of sugar, milk, ghee etc 8. Complete bed rest.
In Ananda kanda, a complete chapter is devoted to the description of Cannabis and its processing for the purpose of rejuvenation.
Special method have been prescribed for the cultivation, collection, processing and preservation of this drug and manufacture of medicines as well as their administration.
Cultivation : For the cultivation of Cannabis, the soil should be free from stones, gravels and sand. It should be black, soft and mixed with ash as well as cow-dung.
The flesh of the snake is to be used as a manure before sowing.
Seeds which are kept inside the mouth of a snake and which are unctuous and heavy are to be selected for sowing in an auspicious day of a bright fortnight (suklapaksa) in the months of July August (Sravana).
Thereafter, water mixed with milk is to be sprinkled over the seeds.
After germination, water mixed with ghee should be sprinkled with sea water.
When branches appear, then the tip of the plant should be cut and a hole made there.
In that hole, one gram of mercury should be poured and the opening should thereafter be closed with sulphur.
When flowers and fruits appear, this plant should be sprinkled with water mixed with alcohol and meat.
Then milk should be sprinkled for one fortnight.
There after, another plant called Jatamamsi (Nardostachys jatamamsi D.C.) should be tied to the branch of the Cannabis plant and it should be sprinkled with water mixed with honey.
For the remaining days, this plant should be sprinkled with water mixed with alcohol.
Thereafter, four different rites are to be performed viz.,
(1) sthapana, (2) sevana, (3) tantubandhana (ortieng the tree with fibres) and (4) lavana (or cutting).
Processing : In a clean place, it should be dried in mild sun and then put on a newly acquired vessel.
The leaves are to be made into a fine powder and kept between two hot plates successively for seven times.
One litre of cow milk should be mixed with one kilogram of sugar and boiled.
To this syrup, the powders of 400gms of Cannabis and 50 gms. of each of eight other medicinal plants are to be added, and thoroughly mixed.
After it has become cool, 500ml. of each of honey and ghee should be added to it and well mixed.
This preparation is to be kept inside a heap of grain for one month.
Every day mantras are to be recited.
Administration of the Therapy : After one month, the medicine should be removed from the heap of grain and in a dose of 5gms. it should be taken by the person.
While doing so, he should reside in an air-tight house observe celibacy and eat only milk and rice.
This has to be continued for 300 years free from any disease and sign of old age.
In Ananda kanda, 50 other different preparations of Cannabis have also been described for the purpose of rejuvenation, aphrodisiac effect and cure of several diseases."
So then, wanna live for 300 years?

Ayurveda is timeless - it has existed for over 4000 years but yet it still applies to modern day life. The key to its longevity is because Ayurveda is logical. An early description given in the Charaka Samhita (the earliest Ayurvedic literature) written circa 150BCE-100CE
Quite interesting when you read it in depth.
