I was thinking of starting my growing using the dwc method. It will be a small stealth grow, with only 2 plants. I already have the strain, Four Way, and a 150w hps for flowering. I was wondering if two 20w fluorescent lights would be appropriate for the vegging. I'm talking about the typical Lowes fixtures with two bulbs each. I was also wondering if the bulbs they sell specifically for "growing" are better than the typical soft or cool white. Unfortunately I haven't checked the lumens/spectrum output on them so I don't know. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

40 watt flouros will not be enough to veg, imo. You would be better off vegging with the HPS. I take it you have clones? If you are starting from seed, then the flouros will suffice, for a bit.

IT all Depends on the strain bro..... I veg 12 clones under a pair of 4 ft shoplights with 2- 40 watt bulbs each and they do great....... My girl is an Indica however and veggs great under a lil less light.... If you are growing a sativa dom strain... you will need more light....

No one light set up is the BEST for all situations.....

Most plants however will veg nicely under Flouros... It all depends on your strain.../shrug

For 2 plants.. I would almost try to veg under a pair of 23 watt CFLs with a good reflector... LOL Unless you wanna grow a couple monsters.. You have to take in account your light penetration too ... If your growing BIG.... then the CFLs are not the way to go...

It all depends on Strain and growing style..

PS.. I am not familiar with 'Four way'.... I found my lil girl in bagseed heh.

Sure you can vegg on flouro's. I do it all the time. Remember to keep your lights close to the tops of the plants to prevent stretching.

I have a rack of 4 two bulb shop lights mounted together and only plug in 1 for seedlings. As the plant grows I plug in the extra lights. Use cool white for vegg. Kitchen and bath is more in the red spec.

My grow area is roughly a 2x2 area. I'm not hoping for spectacular results, I only want to veg for a few weeks anyway. I'll only be growing two plants from seed at a time, so I guess I was just wondering if a light per plant would be enough. I didn't want to veg with hps because I've heard it results in more males, and may be too intense. Thanks for your responses everyone. Happy growing/smoking!:)

Nah. Veg with the HPS. I am using a 2x2 setup with a 150 HPS like yours and the plants do great. I just added another 80 of CFL but only because I am increasing the grow area a bit.

i have 2 400 watt reflectors,1 i use for HPS and the other i used to use for Mh,veggin.i now use the little 27watt,1750 lumen cfls.i have 8 bulbs in a 2x2x4 veg area.they work better to me than the Mh.i have them about 2-3 inches from the canopy of 4 plants in 5gal dwc.i love the cfls.works for me.but i will always flower under hps.

thanks for that question

get 27 watt cfls daylight.. not cool lights (this is for bloom)
the 27 watts is "100" watt

if you got any higher watt than that.. and as long it is daylight (blue light)
it will be great... check DIY forum for extra DIY lighting.. that is helpful.. only 2 plants? in one DWC.. come on... it can grow 6 plants..with netcups.. or check massproducer s clone bubbler that would help for donors if you are interest..

The 27 watt is 27 watt. The "equivalent thing" doesn't count when you are talking about growing.

Yeah that wouldnt be enough your better off buying a high watt eiko floro bulb if thats how your going to grow

papabeach, when you buy a CFL that says it's 42 watts, but is equivalent to a 120 watt incandesant, it doesn't mean that it's 120 watts. It's only 42 watts, but it mimics the light output of a 120 watt bulb, but uses only 42 watts.

In a space like that you could go with 3 or 4 42 watt CFL's, I use two in my space, on natural light and one warm light, and switch the plants everyday so that they are getting both kinda light (Blue natural light is supposed to yield more females.)

I think I'm actually going to order a 200w cfl to veg and assist in flowering. This way I can set up a veg and flowering section (my grow area increased another 2 sq. ft. :p) and maximize my stealth growing. I will be using two similar small dwc systems. Hopefully it all works out. Thanks for all of your help everyone. Happy growing! :)
