Saw this coming for some time, knew the end of my golf course owning was coming soon....but now that it's time, what do I do?? I can drag on unemployment for a bit, they offer pell grants for training or schooling. This nearly 50's guy isn't looking forward to it, but I need to find a new career and soon!

I'm computer illiterate, not good technically or mechanically...and am not looking to go back to manual labor as it's racked this poor old body something fierce....what to study, what to look toward...

I bet there's a lot of this going on all over the USA and world, bet this isn't much new to most...but when it's you, it's sure a big jolt to the system. Anyone else having this issue? What are you planning on doing?

What are your interests? apart from growing. hehe

I would start by having a look at the local college 2 year degree programs, in case retraining is a possibility for you. See if anything catches your eye :hubba: You might be surprised to see what you can qualify to do in 2 short years of education :hubba: Quite a few 2 year programs in the medical area, in particular, which would let you work just about anywhere in the country.

Well the thing NOT to do is to become discouraged and overwealmed. Its never too late to go back to school.. although it does feel funny sitting beside 18 year old kids in college.. I know, I have done it and I am about to turn 53. College now adays thou, u almost need a masters to obtain employment and thats a lot of time and money in class. There are online degrees and there is always starting your own small business. Here in the south landscape business's thrive and the help is cheap because of all our immergrants. Keep yourself busy and more important.. your head up. Wish you the best Roddy, Hero

THANKS for the replies all, appreciated!!

Art, blood and Roddy...not good :) I'll give that area a look though, THANKS!!

Hero, a landscape business was a thought, but there are so many around here now that it likely wouldn't work too well. I have ample experience in that and golf course management (31 years worth), maybe there's a course out west in need of a mower jockey lol.

I was also thinking maybe something in the food prep or even chef's classes, not sure the demand is there though?

Both my mom and brother have licenses, neither are going to re-up this year and let them go into escrow. Nothing is selling in this or many other areas that I know of. Foreclosures are everywhere, houses are sitting empty and rotting in many cases.

Hmmm...

Can you ride an elephant, tame tigers or drive a clown bus? :D I also hear Hick needs someone to help him catch his sheep  :hubba: :D

Seriously,

Home Solar panels, some people believe its the future, and that all are roofs will be covered with them in the near future, ppl wanna make their own power with the cost today, installation, sales, maintenance, there is money to be made, trust me.

Good point- Gets my mind whirling whenever i see a portable mindmill or roof covered with solar panels. Its not really hard either, i think a battery of batteries just re-charge over and over and its a one time cost. Fantastic. I think that the technology is actually being repressed, gotta support the local power co, right!?

I'm 32 and I feel discouraged about going back to school and getting a job... just to give you some perspective..'course, I have back issues so I can't do manual labor and I wouldn't work in retail because I'm just not suited for it :p I did a semester in cooking school.. there's always work for a someone in the food service industry... Also, if you can go to technical school and get a "technicians degree" or something like that and then get certified as a air conditioner installer you could make bank and work anywhere in the world... You could even specialize in installing acs in grow rooms... OR... you could become a truck driver and listen to french audio cds on your long drives and then become a translator when you're tired of the solitude of the road.. ;) or just impress a bunch of ladies... seriously, though.. if I had to stop doing what I'm doing now I'd take out a bunch of loans and get grants and go get some kind of technical degree so that I could work in the renewable energy field (installing solar panels)...

Good luck

I completely changed careers at 39. And there is nothing wrong with going back to school at that age.

You are going to have to decide what you CAN do. If it coincides with something you WANT to do, then that is great, but that cannot always be the case. Sometimes we have to take jobs that we are not really crazy about--we do have to work. I know that I have gotten real used to having a roof over my head and food on the table.

I wld look into a trade school...especially one of those that help place you in a job after graduation. X-Ray Tech, Mechanic, etc....
Good luck bro....gotta be a bit scary starting over.

I worked asa Project manager for a big company for 14 years, then my local Plant closed, so I opted for the MMJ biz. Never looked back.
There are plenty of ways to make a living in the MMJ biz.

Roddy....Are we neighbors ? ? ? ? ?
I drove up to my local golf course today just to verify their Sunday hours of operation so I could take my son up to hit a couple of buckets of balls tomorrow.........on the front door their was a "FOR SALE" sign..........

Is that you Roddy?

No, my friend, ours was sold in auction this summer. But, it's not surprising, golf courses are going down left and right here and many other places. Many public courses rely on leagues for half their business (or more really, league members practice and are club members in many cases as well as play league, they bring their friends etc). Leagues are local businesses bringing their workforce together to have fun....businesses shut down, leagues fold up In the last 5-6 years, I've seen 80% of local factories shut down, our area population dwindle. Golf if a luxury and is one of the things many households are doing without these days. I've seen many big courses including one of the two area country clubs go under in the last year, golf course owners are really feeling the pinch.

Our course was voted #1 in the county 4 years running up until 2 years ago, it won't even be a golf course in a few years (likely a hospital...WOW). A retirement dream my dad had, the economy suddenly sinking 7 years ago and some unscrupulous banking was our downfall. We were offered $3mil for the course 10 years ago, it sold for just over $400k at auction. It's more or less all I've known since age 13....

Loans....not something easy to get these days. Grants are fairly scarce as well. Luckily, we were set up as a corporation with me being able to draw unemployment in the winters...and now, of course. Unemployment offers a few pell grants and such, this is what I am looking into now!

As long as it's not heavy lifting, bending and such, I can do. A back injury has slowed me the last 10 years or so, but I still hold my own fairly well in the manual labor arena. Unfortunately, I won't have the luxury of just calling it a day or blowing a day off like I've been able to if my back is acting up. This makes me want to find something I won't have to worry too much.
