Looks like thrip nymphs to me. Dealing with them myself at the moment. Get a flashlight, turn it on and point it towards the soil and run your hand across the soil. Watch for gnat sized flys.

If it's thick enough it should. Hair and Beard waxs can get sticky so don't over-do it. Tattoo wax balm sticks are another option people might have around the house. More slip than stick. Again untested personally but it's a great out of the box idea.
