Hey there members!

I'm a newbie (though I've done quite a bit of reading). I've been trying to find some information around light hitting the plants from the side rather than the top. I have a space with not much depth (12") or width (37"), but tall (7'). I was thinking of putting 2 x 4' fluorescent units up each side, totalling 4 bulbs on each side (6700K, 2700 Lumens each x 8 = 21600), and hang a CFL ring (2700K, another 2000 lumens) from above that I can adjust up and down (a little flowering color so I don't have to switch bulbs). I'm also thinking of building in a shelf on the top for fans, timer, etc. Will this cause anything funky with equal light coming from each side? I'm thinking of 2 plants only, width is about 37" total, which the protruding fluorescents would take another 6", leaving about 15" x 12" per plant, minus how close the fluorescents should be away from the plants. Scale back to 1 is an option. Will be painted flat white on the inside. A HID is not econmical at the moment, I know it would pay for itself but the initial cash outlay :) How close could the plants be to the lights in this case, up to 2 inches? Will this plan work you think? Thoughts please!

Sounds like you have plenty of lights, but I can't really answer the vertical question. Though, what I've learned about flouros is they don't really heat up too much... just run a fan and you should be cool.

edit- I forgot to finish up your post earlier, to me it doesn't sound like you have enough room... minimum plant height at harvest should be like 4 or 5 ft...

I have 4 vertical 4' flouros and 2 26 watt cfls and a 14 watt cfl sitting above the box. I am in flower now and doing good.

I have about 7 feet to work with, so I can get 6' for the grow portion, a 1 foot high shelf should be enough for wiring, etc. With the hanging circular CFL at maximum height that should give 5 and a half feet or so. I'll try to get seeds maturing about 4' or less.

You're already in the flowering stage? Why'd you ask this far along about lights? :D

That was someone else saying that a similar set up was working successfully :)
