Middle school student shot during lunch break 3:51 PM CDT
05:13 PM CDT on Monday, May 7, 2007
By HOLLY YAN / The Morning News
A 15-year-old Hulcy Middle School student on a lunch break was shot in the leg
Monday afternoon, police said.
Five students told police were returning to school after lunch when they walked
by a home in the 9300 block of Newhall Street, said police Senior Cpl.
Janice Crowther.
A resident saw the students and asked them why they were not in school, and the
students responded by cursing and asking why the resident wasn't at work, Cpl.
Crowther said.
"The juveniles alleged that the resident fired shots in their direction,
striking one of them in the leg," Cpl. Crowther said. The students ran back to
the school in the 9300 block of Polk Street South and notified security.
An ISD spokeswoman Ivette Weis said the child appeared to have been shot with a
type of pellet gun and that his injury did not appear to be life-threatening,
she said.
She said that no schools in the district have open lunches.
Jerry Zmolek, 49, faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,
according to a police report.
Staff writer Tawnell D. Hobbs contributed to his report.
