(CBS News) FORT LEE, N.J. - Texting while jaywalking may land you a ticket in Fort Lee, N.J.
As with most other states, texting while driving is already banned in New Jersey. Now Fort Lee police chief Thomas Ripoli are holding pedestrians accountable by asking them to be more aware.

There have been 23 pedestrian accidents since January, Fort Lee police chief told CBS New York. While most accidents were minor, three fatalities were reported.

"They're not alert and they're not watching what they're doing," Ripoli told CBS New York's Derricke Dennis. "As of now, [officers are] to give summonses to pedestrians who do not adhere to crosswalks and the lights."

There have been some outrageous viral videos of people distracted while texting. Recently, a Los Angeles man almost ran into a bear while texting. Another video shows a woman in a mall who fell into a water fountain because she was distracted from texting.

The woman who fell in the fountain regretted her carelessness in retrospect, emphasizing the dangers of texting while walking.

The texting while jaywalking ban went into effect in the northern New Jersey in March.

Correction posted May 15, 2012 8:28 a.m. ET: Original story implied text and walking would get you a ticket. Tickets will be handed out for "dangerous walking," which could include texting and walking but does not necessarily have to.

While I am sad to see yet another law implemented, one must ask WHY it would take such a move to make people pay attention to what they're doing. I don't own a phone, but I would surely like to think I have more respect for others, more concern for my own personal safety and (gasp) enough control to be able to keep the addiction in check (yeah, I'd have to guess this is an addiction for many) and stay off the stupid thing every second of the day...

*ringtone* Hello WORLD, this is your wake-up call!!

I'm not 'texting' :(.... I'm playing Angry Birds!!!!!

A friend asked me how we ever made it without the phone and all the gadgetry we have nowadays, what did we do? My response....we said HI to people we saw on the streets, we waved at people who drove past us, we opened the door for others around us, we interacted with one another face to face and not screen to screen even though the person is right beside us....

She asked "what ever would we do while waiting for our kids"....ummmmm....take a walk? Smell the flowers? All the things we did before the phone? This is the same person who just the other day told me she had no time to go out and get some exercise??? really?

The law is ridiculous........ The people they are trying to protect with this need to be weeded out. It's evolution. Can't make laws to protect every idiot.

Figure with those Bright Orange tans Jersey folk love to buy. They would be pretty hard to hit.

Not thinking they're making the law solely to protect the person too busy on the phone....imagine hitting someone, even if not your fault. Some of us could live with that, some of us, well....

But I really wish people could act responsibly......

I don't think everyone doing this is an idiot, I truly think many have a problem.
