Things used in this tutorial:
- Samsung Galaxy S21U (any phone with at least x2 optical zoom should be fine)
- phone case
- tripod with phone mount
- cheap Chinese no name "x100" magnifier
- small flat head screwdriver
- rubber washer
- double sided tape (optional)
Refer to numbered attachments.
1. Some of the stuff used in this tutorial.
2. We only need the main part of the magnifier, so let's disassemble it.
3. Luckily, the magnifier fits snugly in the big holes of my case.
4. To prevent it from being pushed outside by the phone, put the washer inside the case like so.
5. Make sure that the magnifier is perpendicular to the back of the phone.
6. Switch your camera app to Pro, use the ST lens (super telephoto AKA x10 zoom), focus to manual and self timer to 2 seconds.
7. Put the phone on the tripod and set it up so that it's as close as possible to the weed sample.
8. For the x3 zoom lens just use some double sided tape because the hole in the case is too small.
9. Here's an example. Far from perfect, but we're talking about a budget of $5 - $30 at most (not counting the phone, obviously).
Additional notes:
The sample should be stationary. Adjust focus by gently pushing/pulling the phone.
Manually lowering the ISO yields better results, but you'll need some decent lighting.
Shooting with x3 is a bit easier than with x10 because you don't have to be super precise while adjusting focus.
