Anyone recommend good soils to begin with? And some to grow the plants in? I know it depends on ph and nutrients, but any brands that some have had better experience with than others? And what about ferts?

Pro-Mix HP. Best soil I have ever seen. Water runs off real well and it has Microbs in the soil to help roots. It has no nutes. You add those as needed,,,AS it should be. Never use soil with Ferts in it if ya can help it.;)
I use Dutch Master Gold Grow A&B and Flower A&B and DM Zone for the Roots.

Alot of people use Fox Farms soils to their grows. I personally, as well as a few others, use soilless growing mediums like Pro Mix to grow in. While some people like the nutrients and everything already in the soil for simplicities sake, I like having nothing in my "soil" so I have complete controll over what my plants are getting. It also help me when I have problems because I know exactly what my plants are eating, so I can diagnose problems better. That being said though, you would gain familiarity with pre ferted soils as well and be able to do what I do with my soilless growing mediums. Really though its all personal preferance.

If you want something a bit more simple to start with, I might go with Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil. Its already PH balanced, so you dont have to worry about that, and it has enough nutes to last your plants a month or two. Also the nutes in it are mild enough for seedlings and clones so its a good starting point.

Pro Mix for me though is just the best, it really allows you to cater to your plants needs and the way it holds water is just lovely.

I, also, like Promix. Sunshine potting mix is very, very close to Promix for half the price but they don't have a Myco or bacteria soil. Promix Organic is my fav so far. Same as Promix HP but with ocean compost.

this is actually fantastic, you can cut it smaller for your use, but usually im to lazy to mix it all up :)

this mix is also in the newest high times magazine

I love Fox Farms but its kinda spendy. I sometimes will make my own soil by mixing soil with 30% perlight and 30% peatmoss and then adding some dolimite lime to the mix and it works pretty good. :D

Fox Farm soil is plug n' play. All I do is add a tablespoon of dolomite lime per gallon of soil. It drains well, and I sometimes over-water with no problems.

I imagine that the aforementioned soils are good choices too. Take your pick, and sow those seeds.
