I knew a guy who worked as a forestry prof at UMaine. He was working on using pine needles as a mulch or soil additive. He said that, while pines perfer acid soil, the needles are quite neutral and don't acidify the soil. The trees grew because of the soil that was already there.
Your gro plot sounds good. I used to do the same in sand/clay/gravel and the plants were huge. My holes were prob 3-6 gal, filled with anything that was better than what I took out, and mixed in a bit of woodash and chicken ****.
Soil pH meters or liquid test kits are readily available at ANY garden store, Home Dep, etc.
