By the time "B.C. Bud" -- a particularly potent form of marijuana from Canada -- reaches Chicago and other big cities, it can fetch $4,000 a pound.

Shipping weed into the United States is big business north of the border -- and getting bigger, authorities say.

While most pot still comes from Mexico, sources familiar with British Columbia's marijuana trade estimate that 30,000 to 80,000 pounds of pot a month is smuggled into the United States, mostly by truck and aircraft.

The production of marijuana and its economic spinoffs have made it British Columbia's third largest industry behind tourism and logging, said criminologist Rob Gordon of Simon Fraser University.

"It's a major component of our gross provincial product," he said.

Authorities are trying to stem the tide.

Just this month, federal and state authorities in Plattsburgh, N.Y., announced the dismantling of an alleged billion-dollar marijuana smuggling ring that used St. Regis/Akwesasne Mohawk Indian reservation land as a transit route into the United States.

Canada also has developed rapidly into a leading supplier of ecstasy, often laced with methamphetamine.

The National Drug Intelligence Center estimates that Canada-based gangs generate between $33 billion and $56 billion annually from drug sales in the United States.

I'm not really for legalization, more for decrimin. I mean when its legal what happens to us growers? Do they say no and consider it like bootlegging? Sorry but i prefer my own home grown and would not do me any good if its legal, taxed, and regulated and can't grow. I'd be just as illegal as i am now.
I say decrim. or leglalize with adults allowed to grow own in there own garden.

Wouldn't it be great if someone compiled all of the estimates and/or actual busts of grows and smuggling into dollars per year, then divided by every man woman and child in the U.S. and published THAT information to show that clearly the demand displays that citizens want it legalized? Then start counting up the cost of law enforcement, judges, jails, etc. etc. planes trains and automobiles for benefit of the self perpetuating government agencies and cost to the people, then couple that with damage to our environment, cost of gang crime etc. that would stop if we grew and sold legally. Why does Michael Moore not do an expose on this?

If it became legal then you would be allowed to grow it. In california if you possess the card to smoke then your also intitled to grow it. You can buy clones from the dispensaries there too.

None of that is making it down here... Like many other places $4K/lb. isn't unheard of for quality bud. It goes for $400-600/oz around here unless you know someone growing and if you don't know anyone growing it's often hard to find anything of quality for a good or bad price. I'm amazed that with all the growing going on in the med states that more major trafficking of killer bud hasn't translated to more readily available bud around the rest of the nation as well. If I wasn't growing I'd be smoking brown weed most of the time because the green produced around here isn't worth what they're asking and it still sells like hotcakes...

Peace!

That's exactly what will happen if legalized. Just like alcohol. It's illegal to distill your own, it needs a tax stamp to be legally purchased and possessed.
