I'm working on my first grow -- a closet grow -- and am currently about five weeks into flowering. I'm using a 450 watt HPS bulb mounted under a reflector hood.

Last night, I noticed that several leaves on one of my plants were significantly burned (crispy and brown). I'd been trying to keep the tops of the plants close to the light because of the plants' height (they're about 3' tall and I've been concerned about light reaching the bottoms).

Would I be better off removing the reflector hood for the rest of this grow and letting the light bulb hang vertically in the middle of the three plants? And would that lower the temperature in the closet?

I would lift the light a little higher, and add another fan blowing directly at the tops to cool them down. Your plants are a little too tall for your light. Just concetrate on getting the most you can out of the main colas at this point. Next grow you should either lst or switch the light sooner.

i think removing the cover would lower the direct heat of your lamp and the heat would dispearse through out your closet making the temp a little lower i would get another fan to keep things cool

Yes another fan will help but raising you light will also help alot. Is that possible for you? and dont worry to much about the bottem branches all the light that there are not getting is going to other branches so it doesnt matter. But if you have a few extra bucks go get some tube or spirel CFL's and put them underneith or beside your plants. I usd cfl's to compliment my HPS and it worked great it covered the lower branches in crystals.
