Authorities have wiped out a large, sophisticated marijuana-growing operation in the Pike National Forest. More than 5,100 pot plants were found growing on Sugarloaf Mountain earlier this month. West Metro Drug Task Force members, aided by a Colorado Air National Guard helicopter, spent nearly 24 hours collecting and removing the marijuana, which weighed more than 2,000 pounds, officials said.
Authorities believe the growers were squatting on the mountainside while they tended to the plants. However, no one was arrested at the scene.
Agents estimate the street value of the confiscated marijuana at $2.5 million. Jefferson County Sheriffs Office spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said the marijuana would be burned.
Anyone with information about the operation is asked to contact the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office.
