Parents who are giving their sick children medical marijuana are stirring controversy in Montana.

Little Cash Hyde, a 2-year-old who survived a cancerous brain tumor, is one of that state's 51 medical marijuana card holders under the age of 18.

His father defends the decision, but not everyone thinks it's such a good idea.

"I believe that, you know, Cash is with us for a lot of reasons. He is a patient of medical cannabis, which has, I think, greatly benefited his battle," said Cash's father, Michael Hyde.

"It's a substance that's hurtful for the brain during development. We believe it's harmful for kids and in our opinion, no, we don't think kids should be using marijuana," said Brandee Tyree with Missoula Underage Substance Abuse Prevention.

Lawmakers are currently considering repealing Montana's medical marijuana law.

There are lots of chemicals that are given to children for various treatments that are much more harmfull. Why do people have to stick thier noses into somebody elses business. They are being treated by a doctor not a corner dealer.

Mmm, this is a tricky one as far as I'm concerned. Not saying its wrong but dont think i would be able to give it to a 2 year old child. I do strongly believe that being exposed to cannabis while your brain is developing could be harmful. Your brain does not store the right information when being exposed to cannabis. JMO

Does he know it may effect his penis?????

Hey cubby that put a funny swerve on the topic

I think Weed may be better then some of the other drugs they could give him, and probably are giving him.

I completely agree.

But I gotta admit I'm a little torn. I think about the narcotics he could be on, and those are much worse and a lot harder on the system then mj would be.

Heck I don't know. I guess if it's really helping these kids then let them have it.

Ok, you have a two year old that can not keep food down because it has gone through chemo due to a brain tumor. And while some people like Brandee Tyree would like to see that child starve to death or be subjected to other more brain-damaging drugs rather than be given a drug like marijuana simply because it is controversial, you have to realize these people are representing an genda. And that agenda belongs to Missoula Underage Substance Abuse Prevention. Hopefully she never has a two year old brain tumor cancer surviivor. If she ever does, and I wish that on no one, then I will care what she thinks.

Ditto, very well said, SSF.

Yeah, we don't want to bring about brain damage in our children, but if they have an ear infection, we give them an antibiotic; for a bad cough they get codeine cough medicine; for a headache we give them Children's Tylenol, etc. If it were my kid I'd be concerned about the brain for sure, but the kid needs to eat too. Plus, if the kid isn't abusing it, then perhaps the risk of brain damage would be less likely. I don't know, but it seems as though it couldn't be worse than some of the drugs that could be administered.

So they would rather poison him with the chemo, then use powerful opiates to numb the pain?

Yeah, way safer than weed.

I would rather give a child a brownie than any oxy contin.

I cannot see why anyone should have a problem with this...mmj is either "real" medicine or it is not. If you actually view mmj as medicine, there should be no reason to question the doctor's prescription. I personally would far, far rather give any of my children or grandchildren mmj than some of the horrible nasty, nasty things they use to combat the side effects of chemo (most of which do not work, by the way).

There are some drugs you dont give to kids for reasons. I'm not saying i wouldn't give it to my kid if i was ever faced with the choice, I'm saying i would be torn though and concerned.

I have not heard of testing being done of the side effects of use on a 2 year old. I just think that more information should be published to make us aware of it if it has been done. If anyone has any links i would be happy to read, Couldnt find a thing

I have a 17 month old old son who has an Arachnoid Cyst between his brain and his skull that we have to have checked many times a year. He was born with it. Luckily it has done nothing but cause a lot of stress on my wife and I. I don't think I would have to think twice if I were in the shoes of this kids parents. If my child could be treated for pain without narcotics and it worked for him then why not? There is a risk taking any medication. The question is how are they giving this kid his supply, through edibles? I hope so..Can't imagine a 2 year old rollin dubies.

From where I'm sitting it looks like the parents are just trying to do what's best for thier kid, period. They have a Doctor they presumably trust, and they have each other, they don't need some anti-marijuana crusader sticking thier nose in.
It always amazes me when someone comes along and tries to dictate the personal and sensitive parts of someone else's life. Unless there's proof that parents are knowingly and willfully doing something NOT in the best interest of the child....BACK THE EFF OFF !!
As far as the kid rolling doobies.....his little fingers probably are'nt that nimble, but he could join the Bong Hitters Club, he'd end up looking like 4U...

Cancer is harmful too...more so then weed....and I don't see an "MD" behind your name woman. So shut the Eff up.
Kid gets mass doses of radiation....I'm sure a lil THC isn't going to hurt.
not eating sounds a lot worse IMO which is a side effect of chemo.
Wow this woman royally pissed me off. I got a kid and if he had cancer....try and stop me from making is quality of life better. I would have marched my a$$ in her office and let her have it. "Where the F do you come off!!!!....I am suing you for slander in calling me a bad parent while acting under the supervision of an actual Dr., also going to file a complaint for you impersonating a doctor" I would aim the suit directly at her not the foundation just to really prove a point. I'd have her job by the time I was done.

with a med card she is violating that child's and parent's rights....hot dang this article got me fired up.
