WASHINGTON D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) The nation's largest marijuana police reform organization is urging shoppers across the country to boycott Walmart.
The Marijuana Policy Project's boycott call comes after the company terminated an employee, Joseph Casias of Battle Creek, for using medical marijuana.
"It's despicable that Walmart would fire such a hardworking and seriously ill employee simply for treating his symptoms with a medicine that he is authorized to use under state law," said Karen O'Keefe, director of state policies for the MPP and lead drafter of Michigan medical marijuana law. "Would Walmart also fire someone for taking doctor-prescribed Percocet, or any of the other legal medications sold in many of Walmart's own stores?"
The group also says that Walmart is contesting Casias' eligibility for unemployment benefits.
