for veg use a metal halide bulb if heat wont be a problem, and use HPS for flowering period.

for seedlings use flourescents with a cold white color or similar

Is this a good idie? If i have a 9 foot area to split it and use metal halide for veg and then HPS for flowering? Do plants continue to grow taller in the flowering stage? and should i split it evenly 4ft6inches or lop-side it for one of the stages so the bulb is farther away?

Actually, I am a big fan of fluoros for vegging. I have a 400W metal halide that I no longer use. I now use a 4' 4 tube T5 for vegging--216W. The T5 produces lush green growth with tight internodal spacing at about 1/2 the watts of the MH. The T5 is substantially cooler and cheaper to run with no loss in growth. CFLs or other fluoro tubes will also do a good job of vegging.

For flowering, go with the HPS.

Plants will double or triple in height when put into flowering, so your flowering space should be taller than your vegging space. Since your height will be limited, you might want to consider a light in a cooltube--you can keep the light within inches of the top of your plant. Actually, a low profile fluoro tube set-up for vegging may be preferable over CFLS, which will take up more vertical space. You might also want to consider advanced techniques like LST, supercropping, or scrog.
