My girl is in late flower. My question is: on the lower branches where buds are minimal, can I cut off the buds, leave the top and get a clone?

Thanks for urgent help. If possible I am going to take some cuttings tomorrow night in hopes of cloning this girl a few more times.

Do not cut off anything. Take clone and root as normal. once the clone has rooted, it will go back into veg just like a plant you harvested then reveg. The buds will unfold into single blade leaves then three blade leaves Etc. It might take the roots a little longer to develop. So be cool and relax a reveged plant is a fun thing to watch.

So, OzzyDioDude, you are confirming from your experience it is possible to clone from a flowering girl? Please confirm.

Yes, it sure is fun this successful cloning thing and watching those who survive grow again! She's alive! She's alive!! WEIRD SCIENCE!!

Yes, I took clones off a plant I was harvesting in Jan 2009 just to win a bet with my brother. That I could clone anything. It did take the root longer to form that normal. The clone now looks like any other plant that has been reveged. If this computer was not so old I would post a picture of the plants now.

Wow, cool! I would like to attempt this tomorrow evening then! I have some empty coke bottles already cut out the bottoms that I would like to place on top of the clones to create humidity.

Do you recommend I place a few holes in coke-bottle-bottom to allow some oxygen and "temper" the humidity? Or do you recommend complete sealed coke-bottle-bottom and only once daily to open them up? I bet this depends on heat/temperature of the surrounding environment.

Since we both grow in soil and you like the coke-bottle method also, and since you affirm you have successful experience cloning with this method, what do you recommend?

+ How long did it take to root and successfully clone from a flowering plant?

Hey WWM, sure you can take some healthy 4 inch cuttings from the lower branches. Don't go nuts and take 200 of em. If you take a few, do as ozzydiodude says and root them under 24/7 low lighting, (a 150 watt HPS at 8 to 12 inches will work fine), with only 3 or 4 leaves per/cutting. Use a quality rooting hormone. You'll of course have to move them out of your flowering room to gain 24/7 light.

Now "Here's the rest of the story" as Paul Harvey used to say; the reaction to being taken while the host plant is in flowering is dependant on strain, the health of the plant, the quality of your rooting hormone and the handling of your cuttings.

If you prepare a glass of neutral ph water with the proper mix of rooting hormone in the water and make your cuts with a very sharp razor at a nice 45 degree angle, IMMEDIATELY put the cutting in the water/hormone and THEN re-cut it right away with another clean, 45 degree cut while under the water, then you'll have your best chance at successful clones.

There is a chance that the clones will hermi on you. Some strains just don't like cloning and if cloned during advanced flowering, some turn hermie.

Yes, I've done it with hundreds of clones. Everything from dirt weed to world class white strains. Some work, others don't.

The only way you'll know if yours will work is to do some.

Good luck my friend!

I use coke bottles in the woods any more to clone. I prefer a 12 hole(12 clones at a time) mini-greenhouse any more and mist the clones 4+ times a day.If you are going away in three weeks you are going to be cutting it close on the plant being mature enough to servive while you are away.

Yeah, I use this underwater method for the previous clone trials: only one survived (but I didn't have a humidity cover for those).

It's settled then! Tomorrow evening more cloning trials on the flowering girl from her lower branches! And if I am cutting it close with my having to leave for 3 weeks - then so be it. Learn by doing, and if they die while I am away then at least I will learn from the experience and grow to be a better and more experienced grower!

Unfortunately, only one of the possible candidates is both large enough and does not have a seed pod. I must wait until I collect those other seeds before I can donate those small branches to clone trials.

The one candidate has only leaves at top (bud), but no other green growth. I don't know if those leaves are enough to support the "pulling-inward" and root production since the last clone trials causes lots of drying and yellowing of the available leaves.

Any thoughts how much is too little to be possible?
