Just bought Some SunMaster Warm Deluxe Metal Halides 400 watt and ballast witha iffy reflector. I would liek to go Soil... how many plants you think i can get under, what are some of the things i should do just some general advice and stuff thanks..

Im planning on building a closet how big should it be i want to put one side veg room with flours and other one flower room with with the metal halide

thakn ya thank ya :woohoo:

I think if you had 8 seedlings and got them through healthily to flowering and got 4 females that would probably be ideal under a 400w.

I agree.... try to leave a foot of space for each plant... say 3x3.. so 9 plants max.

I am in agreement with WidowMaker,
Lights are everything, and a 400 watt HPS will be sufficiant for four.
Get your sunglasses, and your sunscreen LOL

alright thats what i kind of figured and that light is pretty bright :p you guys think i could push 6 under? and what should be the height of lamp, how should i water when etc.

yes you will be fine with 6.

watering takes getting used to, let it get pretty dry before you water it.

Use the back of your hand to see if the lamp is too close, Hold your hand by the plants and if it feels too warm it is... 12-16" is a good guide to go off. there's an ok graph on the site somewhere.

Im planning on using just a squirt bottle and tap water squirt the plants with water then the soil till damp, maybe once a week a good soaking

and how can i find the lumen output?

Hey there JohnO,
55,000 Lumens is what you will get with a 400 Watt, also if your going to get that bulb, go for one that has been inhanced, and has more blue spectrum.
D O N ' T water with tap water. Try to use distilled or at the least, have a container of water with a bubbler in it that can sit, and come up to room temp. The bubbler will help the chlorine to evaporate off. Test the Ph of your water also, 6.5 to 6.7 would be ideal for most grows.

Here is my spectral chart for my bulb. How good is that for flowering cause i think i will use flours for veg. :hubba:

Metal halides will work for flowering but high pressure sodium would be a beter choice for flowering, IMO. I think 400 watt metal halide is around 40,000 lumens as opossed to 55,000 for hps.

35,000 the package says. and can i use a metal halide ballast and reflector and get a high pressure bulb?

:yeahthat: i have my 400W in a 2'x4' area so i can boost the lumen per sq ft and i can get in 8 with a bit of LST/HST room :hubba:

Do you have metal halide and have you flowered fully with it before? Im planning on getting some mylar to enhance it should it help?

no, not for that kind of money, search hps. you can find tube vented 400s for 200
